Configuring Thunderbird 2.x for Unix
- On the File menu, point to New and then click Account Settings.
- On the New Account Setup page, click Email account and then click Next.
- In the Your Name box, type your name.
- In the Email Address box, type your K-State e-mail address and then click Next.
- Select either POP or IMAP as the incoming server and then follow the instructions below for the type of server you chose:
- In the Outgoing Server box, type auth.smtp.k-state.edu and then click Next.
- In the Incoming User Name box, type your eID.
- In the Outgoing User Name box, type your eID and then click Next.
- In the Account Name box, type a name for your account and click Next.
- You will be presented with a summary of your account. Confirm everything is correct and then click Finish.
- Follow the instructions below to enable SSL or TLS and Authenticated SMTP.
Enabling SSL or TLS
In order to view your K-State e-mail using Thunderbird, you have to enable SSL or TLS.
- On the Tools menu, click Account Settings (if
you are not already there).
- On the left, under your account, click Server Settings.
- Click either the SSL option or the TLS option.
- Follow the instructions below to enable Authenticated SMTP.
Enabling Authenticated SMTP
- On the Tools menu, click Account Settings (if
you are not already there).
- On the left, below your account and Local Folders, click Outgoing Server (SMTP).
- Click the Edit button.
- Under Security and Authentication, click the Use name and password check box.
- In the User Name box, type your eID.
- Click the SSL option and then click OK.
- Click OK.
Importing an Address Book
Importing From a Text File
- Click the Address Book button.
- On the Tools menu, click Import.
- Click Address Books and then click Next.
- Click Text file and then click Next.
- From the Files of Type list , select the type of text file to be imported.
Note: Comma separated values and Tab separated values are text files that are the most commonly used by most e-mail clients. Check which file types are supported by the programs you will be importing to.
- Browse to the file location, select the file and then click Open.
- Match the address book fields with the data being imported.
- Click OK.
Exporting an Address Book
- On the Window menu, click Address Book.
- Click the Address Book you want to export.
- On the Tools menu, click Export.
- Browse to the saving location and then enter a file name in the File name box.
- In the Files of type box, select the file format for the exported address book (ldif, .csv, .tab, or .txt).
Note: Comma separated values and Tab separated values are text files that are the most commonly used by most e-mail clients. Check which file types are supported by the programs you will be importing to.
- Click Save.
Subscribing to Folders
If you have configured your e-mail client to use IMAP, folders are created and stored on the IMAP server. You can also create folders on your local machine if your client supports that feature. If you switch e-mail clients, your IMAP folders will still exist on the IMAP server, but you may not be able to view them. In order to access those folders in your new e-mail client, you must subscribe to those folder(s). To subscribe to your folders, do the following:
- On the File menu, click Subscribe.
Note: The folders you are subscribed to will have a check mark in the subscribe column. The folders you aren't subscribed to will have an empty check box in the Subscribe column.
- In the Subscribe column, click on the empty check box for each folder you want to subscribe to.
- Click OK.
Enabling Thunderbird's Spam Filter
- On the Tools Menu, click Junk Mail Controls.
- On the Adaptive Filter tab make sure Enable adaptive junk mail detection is selected.
