Mac Mail 3.x for OS X

Configuring Mac Mail 3.x for OS X

  1. On the Mail menu, click Preferences.
  2. Click the Create an Account button Image of Create an Account button to create a new account.
  3. In the Full Name box, type your name.
  4. In the Email Address box, type your K-State e-mail address.
  5. In the Password box, type your eID password and then click Continue.
  6. On the Account Type list, select either IMAP or POP.
  7. In the Account Description box, type a description of the account.
  8. Follow the instructions below for the type of server you chose on the Account Type list:
    • IMAP: In the Incoming Mail Server box, type imap.k-state.edu.
    • POP: In the Incoming Mail Server box, type pop.k-state.edu.

    Note: IMAP is the recommended incoming server type. See IMAP vs. POP.

  9. Click Continue.
  10. In the Outgoing Mail Server box, type auth.smtp.k-state.edu.
  11. Click the Use Authentication check box.
  12. In the User Name box type your eID, if it is not already there.
  13. In the Password box type your password, if it is not already there, and then click Continue.
  14. You will be presented with a summary of your account. Confirm everything is correct and then click Done.
Enabling Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
  1. On the Mail menu, click Preferences.
  2. Click the Accounts button.
  3. Click the Advanced button.
  4. Click the Use SSL check box.

    Note: This is an illustration of IMAP settings. POP settings will display the POP port number which is 995.

  5. Close the window and then click Save.
Enabling Authenticated SMTP
  1. On the Mail menu, click Preferences.
  2. Click Accounts.
  3. Click the current Outgoing Mail Server and then click Edit Server List.
  4. Click the Create an Account button Image of Create an Account button.

  5. Under the Account Information tab, in the Server Name box, type auth.smtp.k-state.edu.
  6. Click the Advanced tab.
  7. Click the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) check box to enable the function.

  8. Click the Use custom port option and then type 465 in the box next to that option.
  9. On the Authentication menu, select Password.
  10. Type your eID and password into the corresponding boxes.
  11. Click OK.

Address Book

Note: The Address Book is a separate application from Mail and is opened from the Applications list.

Importing an address book from an LDAP Interchange Format (LDIF) File
  1. Open the Address Book.
  2. On the File menu, point to Import and then click LDIF.
  3. Browse to the file location, select the file and then click Open.
Exporting an address book
  1. On the File menu, click Back up Address Book.
  2. In the Save As box, type the desired file name.

  3. In the Where box, browse to the saving location.
  4. Click Save.

Subscribing to folders

If you have configured your e-mail client to use IMAP, folders are created and stored on the IMAP server. You can also create folders on your local machine if your client supports that feature. If you switch e-mail clients, your IMAP folders will still exist on the IMAP server, but you may not be able to view them. In order to access those folders in your new e-mail client, you must subscribe to those folder(s). To subscribe to your folders, do the following:

  1. On the Mail menu, click Preferences.
  2. Click the Accounts button.
  3. Select the e-mail account and then click the Advanced tab.
  4. Click the Automatically synchronize changed mailboxes check box.
  5. Close the window and then click Save.
  6. Close Mail and then reopen it.

    Note: If the mailbox list is not displayed, from the View menu, click Show Mailboxes and then click the arrow to the left of the account to display your IMAP folders.

Enabling Mac Mail's Spam Filter

  1. On the Mail menu, click Preferences.
  2. Click the Junk Mail button Illustration of the Junk Mail button.
  3. Click the Enable Junk Mail filtering check box.
  4. To set whether filtering is in training or automatic mode, choose one of the following options:
    • Leave it in my Inbox, but indicate it is Junk Mail (Training)
    • Move it to the Junk mailbox (Automatic)
    • Perform custom actions (Click Advanced to Configure)

      Note: The Junk mailbox is created when you choose the Move it to the Junk mailbox option.

  5. To further define what is and isn't junk mail, select the following options if needed:
    • Sender of message is in my Address Book
    • Sender of message is in my Previous Recipients
    • Message is addressed using my full name

      Note: Click the Advanced button to define additional conditions the e-mail must meet before the filter is applied.

  6. Click the Trust Junk Mail headers set by your Internet Service Provider check box if desired.
  7. Close the window and then click Save.
