Interim Director of Enterprise Server Technologies

Description

Kansas State University seeks internal nominations and applications for the position of Interim Director of Enterprise Server Technologies (EST). EST, a department within Information Technology Services (ITS), provides enterprise server, storage, and backup infrastructure, as well as the associated support services, to the students, faculty, and staff of Kansas State University. These services include the storage and management of the University's core business data, the maintenance and support of the University Data Center(s) and all hardware that comprises the enterprise infrastructure.

Responsibilities

The Director of Enterprise Server Technologies (EST) serves as the senior technology infrastructure manager for Kansas State University. In that capacity, the Director leads, plans, directs, and manages the activities and services of ITS Enterprise Server Technologies (EST), including overseeing a staff of approximately 15 technical and non-technical professionals and a multi-million dollar budget. The Director provides the University with high quality, customer-focused technology services related to enterprise server environments. The Director also oversees the planning, design, development, maintenance, and operations of the University's enterprise server and storage infrastructure. The EST Director reports to the CIO/Vice Provost for Information Technology Services.

Leads and Manages Major University IT Program
  • Exercises responsibility for all aspects of short and long range planning; budgeting and execution; workforce planning and management; purchasing; systems evaluation; capital project management; policy administration; customer service; and operational processes for EST as it relates enterprise server and storage infrastructure environments, including data center management and architecture.
  • Directs the development, acquisition, and management of contracts supporting EST services.
  • Evaluates current and proposed programs and operations and initiates, modifies, recommends, and discontinues such activities as appropriate.
  • Develops effective working relationships with campus constituents, including colleagues within ITS and other campus leaders, both technical and non-technical.
  • Works collaboratively with ITS leadership and management to ensure activities and services are aligned with university priorities and campus needs.

  • Leads, plans, or coordinates inter-departmental and enterprise-wide IT teams, and assures departmental staff participation on such teams.
Oversees the Planning, Management, and Operations of Enterprise IT Infrastructure
  • Oversees a variety of customer-focused technology services as they relate to the University's enterprise server and storage infrastructure environments.
  • K-State utilizes Solaris, Windows and a variety of Linux operating systems.
  • Oversees the design, development, maintenance, and operations, and provides technical leadership, and strategic planning, for all operating systems and platform technologies for the University data center and for many supporting technologies, including the enterprise storage system, enterprise backup, disaster prevention and recovery technologies, and enterprise system monitoring and management technologies.
  • Oversees the deployment and use of both internal and external "cloud" computing infrastructures that includes co-location facilities, and virtual environments for college and department requirements
  • Continually analyzes operational methods, integration, and monitoring tools and support processes in order to maintain and improve the efficiency and stability of infrastructure operations.
  • Leads the investigation in and leveraging of new technologies to improve the efficiency and operations of services.
  • Ensures the development, documentation, and implementation of University policies, standards, and procedures related to the design, development, implementation, management, and security of the enterprise server and storage infrastructure environments.
Supervises and Directs Work
  • Exercises responsibility for all aspects of staffing and workforce management for EST, including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving issues in accordance with University policies.
  • Assesses current and future staffing needs, and plans for, acquires, manages, and ensures effective integration of IT staff (both university and contract).
  • Ensures that managers and staff in areas of responsibility have a customer-service focus.
Serves as a Representative/Liaison
  • Serves as a member of the ITS management team and enterprise IT leadership teams, participating in ITS and enterprise IT initiatives.
  • Represents EST, ITS, and/or the University with campus, local, state, federal, and professional organizations in areas of expertise and responsibility.

Mandatory Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience managing a complex technology service organization with strong knowledge of best practices in administration, finance, budget, staffing, business planning and operations, and continuous service improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating and implementing new practices and technologies to improve an organization's overall programs and services.
  • Experience as a manager or supervisor of technical professionals and projects within a technology environment.
  • Demonstrated technical competence in the areas of enterprise server architecture, management, and support; enterprise storage architecture, management, and support.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and proven ability to set direction and define strategy for a technology organization.
  • Excellent customer service skills as demonstrated by the ability to work directly with constituents and vendors to understand and resolve functional and/or technical issues and concerns.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a wide range of individuals, including senior technical and non-technical leadership.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness with verbal and written communications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in technology, business administration, or related field
  • Experience managing an information technology services organization within a university setting
Salary Range: $100,000 - $115,000
