Manhattan does have a public bus system, the aTa Bus, that follows two fixed routes across town. You can also make a reservation on the aTa Bus for a specific pick-up time and location. The aTa Bus is in operation Monday through Friday from 7am to 6pm and Saturday from 8am to 7pm. You can click on the following link for more information on the aTa bus, including rates and information on routes: You can also call the aTa bus at (785) 537-6345 to make a reservation. All reservations require 24hour advance notice.

You can also use a taxi to get around Manhattan, however you will need to call ahead to request one. If you wish to call a taxi, there are two taxi companies in Manhattan you can use. ABC Union Cab company can be reached at (785) 537-1295 and Bell Taxi Transportation can be reached at (785) 537-2080. When you call, make sure you tell them where you want them to pick you up and where you want them to take you and always make sure you ask them to quote the price before you book a taxi.

The cost of taking a taxi in Manhattan is $2.60 for the first passenger plus $1.60 for each mile driven. Each additional passenger is $1.00.

The Black Car differs from a taxi in several ways. 1) It's a luxury car service; 2) They charge flat, pre-determined rates- no rolling meter or guess work; 3) You can reserve their car by hours, days and weeks in advance. Their office takes reservations 7:00a.m. until midnight every day. You can reserve the car for service that takes place 24 hours a day. If you need service after midnight be sure to contact them in advance to set it up. For more information please visit their website:

You may decide to purchase a bike while in Manhattan. Bikes are a cheap and easy way to travel around campus and Manhattan. It is strongly recommended that you purchase and use a lock to secure your bike when not in use. If using and parking your bike on campus, you must register your bike with Parking Services at Kansas State University. Registration is free and you risk receiving a parking ticket if you do not register your bike.  It is also highly recommended that you wear a bike helmet while riding as well.

The following safety tips are taken from the KSU Campus Safety Website, which can be found at

Record the serial number of your bike.
Never leave your bike unattended or unlocked.
Use sturdy U-Locks or heavy, case-hardened chains to lock your bike.
Lock your bike on a bike rack. Most stolen bikes were never even locked up!
If you’re really concerned about theft, carry your front wheel with you after you park your bike. Who’d steal a one-wheeled bike?
While you’re at it, take your accessories. Those gel pad seats are a hot commodity!
Keep your bike locked in your room when you’re not riding it
Wear a helmet.
Stay off sidewalks. Use bike lanes instead.
Be sure your bike has a front light and reflectors to meet the state law.

Car Insurance: Kansas state law requires all drivers to have automobile insurance in order to own and operate a car. You should keep your proof of insurance card (issued by your insurance company) in your car at all times and must be prepared to show it upon demand if you are stopped by a police officer for any reason. Purchasing car insurance can be costly and it is recommended that you look at several insurance companies and compare prices before purchasing insurance. You may also want to ask a trusted friend about insurance rates before purchasing any insurance.

Car Maintenance and Repairs: Proper regular maintenance of your car is important and will help prevent costly future repairs to your car. You should remember to check your car’s oil and coolant on a regular basis as well as tire inflation level. It is recommended that you get a written cost estimate before deciding on any repairs. You may also want to compare estimates with several repair shops before making a decision.

Car Accidents: If you happen to be involved in an accident involving your car or another person’s car, do not move your car and do not leave the scene of the accident. Call 911 and wait for the police to arrive on scene. It is important that you get the name, address, driver’s license number, and insurance information from the other drivers involved in the accident. You will also need to give this same information to the other drivers involved. You should also contact your insurance company as soon as you can after the accident and tell them you were involved in a car accident.
