TEMPORARY HOME STAY

International Student and Scholar Services recognizes the need for temporary housing for international students when they arrive for the fall semester. In some cases, the newcomers may be able to find temporary housing with friends or through one of the international student associations or through their academic department. However, if a newcomer cannot arrange for temporary housing, then the community group Helping International Students (HIS) will attempt to find a family that will open their homes to one or two new international students. HIS is a church-based Christian organization. More information about HIS can be viewed at www.kansas.net/~his/. Home stays for the Fall 2009 will be from August 12, 2009 through August 22, 2009. The international student will be expected to make arrangements for permanent housing by August 22, 2009. There will be no extensions to the home stay and there is no charge for the home stay and the host family has volunteered to take in an international student. Each host family will be expected to provide one meal per day for their guest. The meal provided will be at the discretion of the host family. In other words, it will be for the family to decide whether that meal be breakfast, lunch or dinner. The host family will have a separate room for their guest(s). In no case shall a guest share a room with another member of the family. However, if the room has two beds, the student may share a room with another international student if the family chooses to host 2 students. The host family is not expected to provide transportation for the student unless the family chooses to do so. The international student will be expected to make his/her own arrangements for transportation around Manhattan and to campus. The student may contact the International Coordinating Council or their student association for assistance with transportation. There will be no expectation of a continuing relationship between the student and the host family after August 22, 2009. It will be up to the discretion of the host family to invite the student to the house after that date if they wish to. The host family will not provide any financial support to the international student. This is in accordance with INS regulations. There is no guarantee that a student will be placed with a host family after submitting a request. There is a limited number of home-stays available. It is recommended that you place your request as early as possible. Any questions or concerns should be directed to HIS at his.manhattan@gmail.com or (785) 537-3988. If you would like to request a temporary home-stay, please complete and submit the form below. Deadline for submitting the Fall 2009 home-stay application is August 5, 2009.
