iSIS Student-centered FAQs

About iSIS

  1. What is iSIS?

iSIS is Kansas State University's new student information system. The system manages all aspects of the enrollment and maintenance of undergraduate and graduate students, from applying and enrolling in classes, to accessing grades and paying for tuition. iSIS replaces the following systems:

    • KATS (K-State Access Technology System)
    • SIS (Student Information System)
    • FAMS (Financial Aid Management System)
    • BRS (Billing Receivable System)
  2. Why is K-State implementing iSIS?
    • To move from an outdated, unsupported mainframe student system.
    • Make it easier to get information that you want, when you want.
    • Improve enrollment processes such as ability to see number of seats available in a class, real-time, and to automatically waitlist for a class.
    • Improve security of personal information.
  3. What is the timeframe for implementing iSIS?

    See the iSIS Transition Schedule.

  4. How will I know when to use iSIS and when to use KATS?

Until the start of the fall 2008 term, both systems will be used; KATS will gradually be used less frequently and iSIS use will increase. When accessing KATS from the K-State homepage, you are taken to a transition page that directs you to the correct system during this phased implementation. KATS will no longer be accessible beginning in the fall 2008 term.

  5. Will there be training offered to students on how to use iSIS?

Online help information and instructions are available on the iSIS help webpage.

  6. Is iSIS Help accessible while signed into iSIS?

Yes, iSIS Help is available from both the iSIS sign-in page as well as within the application. iSIS Help opens in a new window, so the current active session of iSIS will not end when navigating to the help section.

  7. KATS signed me out after 3 minutes of inactivity; will that be the same in iSIS?

iSIS is set to sign students out after 10 minutes of inactivity to better meet student needs. However, for security purposes, it is always important to sign yourself out by clicking the "sign out" link at the top of the page.

  8. Will I be able to do everything in iSIS that I can do in KATS?

Yes, plus several new features are available, such as Search for Classes, View your Class Schedule in a weekly calendar view in addition to a list view, and View and Print a summary of academic history.

  9. Will I still have access to the MarketPlace to purchase athletic tickets, parking permits, etc.?

Yes, the MarketPlace is accessible from within iSIS.

Advising

  1. Will I be able to tell who my assigned advisor is in iSIS?

Yes, your advisor is listed in your Student Center in iSIS.

  2. How will my advisor access my information?

In iSIS, advisors can see a list of advisees associated with him/her and are able to access necessary student information. Advisors are also able to access necessary student information for any student to support walk-ins.

  3. Will I still be able to view and print a DARS report in iSIS to discuss with my advisor?

Yes, the DARS report (called a Degree Progress report in iSIS) and is viewable and printable within iSIS.

Class Rosters

  1. Will my SSN continue to be used as my Student ID on class rosters?

No. Your Wildcat ID # (or WID), which is found in the upper left-hand area of your Wildcat ID card, is used as your student identifying number on class rosters. This is a 9-digit number that always begins with an "8".

  2. How will my instructor know whether I am taking the class as part of a graduate or undergraduate program, or whether I am enrolled as both a graduate and undergraduate student?

Your program and plan (major), which includes an identifier of graduate or undergraduate, is listed on the class roster. For example, "BA Undergraduate Degree - Mgmt Information Systems-B", is listed in the Program and Plan column. When you enroll, you select the "Career" of Graduate or Undergraduate for which the class is being enrolled under.

Enrollment Requirements

  1. How will enrollment requirements be enforced?

All course and class requirements are enforced. Some pre-requisites may automatically block students from enrolling in a class if the pre-requisite is not met. Others will be manually monitored. Students and faculty will need to check in both iSIS and the University catalog to determine course pre-requisites for at least the 2008-09 academic year.

  2. I am currently taking a course that is a pre-requisite for a course that I am enrolling in for the next term (semester); will the current enrolled course be recognized as a pre-requisite? What happens if I fail the current course?

Current enrollments are considered as having been completed satisfactorily when you enroll for a subsequent term, so yes, you will be able to enroll in the next course. However, if you fail the current term pre-requisite course, the course will be dropped from your future schedule.

  3. I have met the prerequisites for the class that I want to enroll in according to the university catalog, but I am still not allowed to enroll in the class in iSIS, what do I do?

Contact the instructor for the class. The instructor may then grant permission to override the pre-requisites by providing this information to their departmental office. Once the permission has been granted in iSIS, you will be able to add the class to your schedule.

  4. I do not exactly meet the prerequisites for a course that I want to enroll in but I am sure I will be successful in the course, what do I do?

Contact the instructor for the class. The instructor may then grant permission to override the pre-requisites by providing this information to their departmental office. Once the permission has been granted in iSIS, you will be able to add the class to your schedule.

Enrollment

  1. What changes will I experience in the enrollment process?
    • Your total possible enrollment, including waitlisted classes, is set at 21 hours per semester.
    • You are limited to enroll in only one class (section) of a course at one time.
    • Classes sometimes have reserved capacities such as a certain number of seats reserved for majors, etc., in order to improve your ability to get the classes that you need.
    • You will use a course search tool in iSIS which is an advanced tool to search for classes in various different ways such as by day of week, range of time of day, location, etc.
    • You are able to view the total number of seats available for a class, the number still open, and the number of students waitlisted for the class, when applicable.
    • You may choose to automatically waitlist for a class during enrollment. If a seat opens up and you are next on the list, you will then be automatically enrolled in the class.
  2. How will I know the date and time that I will be allowed to enroll in iSIS?

In your iSIS Student Center, beginning March 7, you will see the date and time of your enrollment availability, located on the right-hand side of the page under "Enrollment Dates". Click on the "details" link for specific information. This will be the date and time for enrolling in iSIS for the Fall 2008 term. (Your Summer 2008 enrollment date and time will be similar, but not exactly to the minute. Your Summer 2008 enrollment dates are available at courses.k-state.edu/summer2008/information.)

  3. How will I know which courses are offered online, on campus, or both?

The Class Search feature has several different search criteria available including the ability to search by Location (Manhattan, Salina, Manhattan DCE, or Salina DCE) and Mode of Instruction (In Person, Web, Telnet, Video, etc.) The locations of Manhattan DCE and Salina DCE denote classes that are offered through the Division of Continuing Education. These Class Details as well as the Class Meeting room are available to view for each class.

  4. How do I enroll in online or distance classes?

For fall 2008, you enroll in those classes in the same manner that you enroll in on-campus courses within iSIS. (Note: For the Spring or Summer 2008 term, distance students will enroll at the Division of Continuing Education (DCE) website: www.dce.k-state.edu.)

  5. What do I do if the class that I want to take requires instructor permission?

Contact the instructor for the class. The instructor may then grant the permission. Once the permission has been entered in iSIS by the instructor’s department, you will be able to add the classes to your schedule, assuming any other enrollment requirements have been met and there is space available in the class.

  6. I am an undergraduate student and want to take courses for graduate credit or I am a graduate student wanting to take courses for undergraduate credit, how do I enroll in iSIS?

In order to enroll for credit outside of your current undergraduate or graduate "career", you must first have a separate career created in iSIS. This is necessary for graduate students taking background courses for undergraduate credit and undergraduate seniors taking courses for graduate credit (beyond requirements for bachelor’s degree). Complete the request form which is available on the Graduate School website. Once the career is created, Add a Class using the newly created career.
