Searching for Classes

Purpose

Use this procedure to browse the Class Schedule for a given term.

Trigger

Perform this procedure when you need specific information relating to the Class Section offerings at K-State for a given term.  For example, a Class Search is useful when planning the courses to take.

Use the following menu path(s) to begin this task:

·         Faculty Center  Class Search

Helpful Hints

·         The Class Search has an advanced search feature labeled (Additional Search Criteria).

·         If looking for Classes for enrollment, take note of the 5-digit Class Number (Reference Number).  This number can be used to expedite the enrollment process.

3.       As required, complete/review the following fields:

Field Name

Description

Institution

R

Entity (such as a university or college) that is independent of other similar entities and that has its own set of rules and business processes.  K-State will use KSUNV as the institution designation.

Example:         Kansas State University

Term

R

Semester in which classes are offered.  Terms are identified by a four-digit number where the first digit represents the century, the second and third digits represent the year, and the final digit represents the semester (2 for Spring, 3 for Summer, 5 for Fall).  I.e.  Fall 2008 = 2085, Spring 2009 = 2092.

Course Subject

Abbreviation of the subject offering a given course.

Course Number

System-generated unique identifier that represents that course within iSIS.

Course Career

Career assigned to the course.

    Undergraduate courses refer to all classes numbered 001 - 799.  Graduate refers to all classes numbered 800 and above.

    It is recommended that graduate students leave this value blank, especially if they are searching for classes numbered 500-799.

Show Open Classes Only

Returns on Classes that have not yet met their Enrollment Capacity.

    If you want to view Classes with the potential of a Waitlist, this box must be unchecked.

Class Nbr

A four or five digit number used as the unique identifier for class sections each term.  Class numbers are assigned to every class section offered during a term and are found in the Schedule of Classes for enrollment purposes.

Course Title Keyword

Any word within the course title.

Course Component

O

Designation for the type of course (Lab, Lecture, Independent Study, etc.).  Courses may be made up of more than one component.

Session

Periods of instruction within a given term.

    K-State is using two (2) Sessions:  Regular Academic Session, which refers to classes that begin at the start of the term and end at the completion of the term, and Nonstandard, which refers to any other class (i.e., intersession classes, short classes, etc.).

Mode of Instruction

Indicates how the content of a course will be delivered to the student, i.e. In Person, CD-ROM, teleconference, etc.

Location

Term used to designate whether a class is offered at the Manhattan campus (MAN), the Salina campus (SAL), or through the Division of Continuing Education at either Manhattan (MCE) or Salina (SCE).

13.     To view the details of a particular Class Section, click the link of the Section.  For example, click  to view the details of MUSIC 230 (Music Theory 2), Section B.

    This view will indicate all pertinent information about a Class, including:  All required components of the course, Pre-Requisite information, whether the Class requires instructor Consent, any Class Notes, etc.

Comments

If a student is using the Class Search during enrollment, they will be offered a Select Class that will add the selected Class to their cart for enrollment.

    It is strongly recommended to search for classes before enrollment and record the Class Number (5-digit number associated with each Class).  This will significantly reduce the time it takes to enroll.
