1. Write letter to universities from which you have got I-20 but you
are not joining about your decision to join “ZZZZ” university.
2. Write a letter to universities from which you received I-20 saying
about deferring of admission to the following semester. (In case you
wish to shift in the next semester to that university.)
3. Foreign
exchange conversion (Money to be carried)
Money to be carried = [(Half of the tuitions on I-20) + Health Insurance + Initial Months Expenses (2000 $)]
Out of which 300 $ in cash and rest in traveler’s checks and or demand Draft in favor of university.
Traveler’s checks are very suitable. Demand Drafts sometimes create problems.
4. Visit Family
Doctor
1) Get family doctor’s sign on the health form provided by the university. If university do no issue any form then get a letter from doctor on his letterhead stating the vaccination and the date on which it is taken with his sign and stamp (Format attached at bottom).
2) Take hepatitis-B vaccines, Tetanus toxoid and other required vaccines.
3) Get the chest X ray done (PA View)
4) Take whole file of medical records to the university.
5) Get all the necessary medicines and their prescription.
5. Take oversees mediclaim policy for minimum period. (This is required
till you get your health insurance in the USA)
Companies such as New India
assurance, United India etc. give such type of policies. Consult any agent for
this. Generally company emphasizes that 2 months heath policy should be taken
for students. But take it for minimum amount of period. It can be taken for small that is around 21 days.
As such this policy is not required but this is supposed to help if you are injured while coming to university (Pray for that this will not happen with anybody). But do not think of much help.
Things required for taking insurance:
1.Filling the form and for that photocopies of passport and I-20.
2.Name and address with telephone of doctor and his registration no.
6. First get Indian driving
license and then get I.D.P. (International Driving Permit valid in US for 1
year)
After coming to USA, you have to appear for the written test and finally
driving test. After written test you
will get I.P. and this acts as a valid photo identity.
7. Visit Dentist and take suitable treatment and ask him how to take the care of teeth while you will in USA.
8. Visit ophthalmologist (Whether you are having any eye problem or
not)
Take 2-3 glasses to the university or proper number of contact lenses whichever applicable. Take medicines and eye drops from the doctor with prescription.
9. Contact Indian Student
Association for temporary accommodation and ask them about arrival on the
campus. (On Kansas City International
Airport you have to pay 1.5 $ in the form of cents
for taking cart which will carry your luggage. So keep change in the form of
cents with you or you can get from the shops inside the airport terminal.)
10. Medicines.
Get prescription written down by your Doctor for the medicines strip you
are taking. Bring the medicines in bulk (If you are having some specific
illness), as they are expensive in US.
11. Purchase Bags according to specification. (Generally 2 check-in
pieces are allowed with one hand luggage. Check in luggage with total linear
dimension (l + b + h) not exceeding 270 cms. And linear dimension of each
should not exceed 115cm and weight of each bag should not exceed 32 Kgs.)

All these personal items (13),
utensils (14) and food items (15) can be adjusted according to space available
in the bag and can delete some items, you can purchase after coming here.

(Take all the original documents to the school.)
5. College leaving certificate
Some of the things such as SOP, Recommendation etc
can be stored on CDS or floppies and can bring those CDs.
16. For
all the documents mentioned in 15 take
3 photocopies (One for home and remaining sets in check-in bags and original in cabin bag.

containing addresses, telephone Nos and e-Mail ID of friends and relatives from
both India & USA.

Sign and seal of Doctor
1. Go to Graduate school (Fairchild Hall) with the original marksheets and degree certificate or provisional marksheets/certificate. The school will keep photocopies for them and will return the original.
2. Go for getting your K-state ID card. It can be obtained from K-state Student Union. At first you will have your admission number on the ID card, which is to be changed to your social security number (SSN) when you get your SSN.
3. Go to bank and open the account in the bank. Deposit cash or travelers checks in the bank and take temporary checks from the bank. You can order extra checkbooks by paying some money when you get your permanent address. This permanent address will be printed on your checks.
4. Go to Lafene health Center and take the health insurance. You can pay here by checks given by the bank.
5. Go for Skin PPD test (TB test). The result of this test is available after 48 hours. If the test is negative then no problem and if positive then you are supposed to undergo chest x-ray. Keep your x-ray you had in India with you. You cannot enroll in the courses till you have completed your Skin PPD test.
6. Go to department. If you have assigned the adviser, visit your adviser or take appointment with him/her.
7. Go to International student center.
8. Attend the graduate student and International student orientations and department orientation if any.
9. Apply for SSN.
