Some J-1 Exchange Visitors are affected by a provision referred to as the "two year home country residence requirement." That is, after completing their program in the U.S. some Exchange Visitors must return to their home country for a minimum of 2 years before they will be permitted to apply for permanent resident status or for certain other nonimmigrant visas, such as H-1 or L.
All Exchange Visitors should be aware of this rule and know whether or not it applies to them. The U.S. Consular officer should indicate whether you are subject to this "home country residence requirement" by marking the lower left corner of your Form DS-2019. It may also be noted on your visa and your I-94.
