Protecting your computer

It is imperative that K-Staters protect their computers. Computer security risks and threats have risen dramatically, and it is your responsibility to protect your computer and your data. Protecting your computer helps protect the university's network and resources, as well as other K-Staters.

If your computer is compromised, it will be blocked from accessing the network until it has been repaired and/or patched. Once infected, often the only repair procedure available is reformatting the computer's hard drive. See the Policy and Procedures Manual for more information.

K-State network requirements

All K-Staters are required to perform the following tasks to protect their computers:

  • Install and run the K-State-provided antivirus software. Other antivirus software, including software that came with the computer, will need to be uninstalled before installing K-State's antivirus software.
  • Configure Microsoft Windows Update service (or Mac OS X Software Update) and set to install updates automatically.
  • Set a log-in password for the "administrator" account on Windows XP systems or a password protected account on Mac OS X systems.
Residence halls
Preparing your computer

It is highly recomended that students in the residence halls who are bringing a computer or gaming device to K-State complete the network access process before they arrive on campus. This includes both Ethernet and wireless connections.

This process includes downloading and installing the K-State Client Security Agent (CSA) provided by Bradford Networks to verify that your computer meets the following requirements:

  • A valid, licensed operating system supported by K-State
  • Installation of all current security patches for Windows or Mac operating systems
  • K-State antivirus software (available free to all students) installed with the latest updates
    If you are using antivirus software from a different vendor, you must remove it before installing K-State antivirus software

Passwords that meet K-State password guidelines are also required on all computer accounts. While the CSA will not check for passwords during the network access process, you will eventually be disconnected from the Internet if you do not have these established.

Successful completion of network access ensures a safe and secure connection to the Internet while at K-State. Failure at any time to meet the requirements listed above will result in your disconnection from the Internet.

Software recommendations

  • K-State antivirus can be downloaded from this K-State link or the CatPack.
  • CatPack contains personalized software for K-Staters only. It includes dial-in, anti-virus, and other software that can be used on campus and at home.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy (for windows only) is a powerful program that removes all currently known adware and spyware programs; it is free for personal and university use.

Laptop security

All laptop and tablet PC owners should be aware that their computers are at a greater risk of theft, and therefore should always follow these security tips:

  1. Don't leave your laptop unattended.
  2. Use a locking security cable. This is the single, best way to protect a laptop. It's especially critical for laptops that are left on office desktops. Cables are strong, portable, lightweight, and cost about $28.
  3. Use encryption software to safeguard your data. If your laptop is stolen, your files can't be accessed without the encryption key. Microsoft Windows XP has file-encryption capability built into it.
  4. Put identification on the laptop itself. This can aid in recovering your laptop if it's stolen. Options range from a sticker with your phone or e-mail address to an engraved identification.
  5. Record your laptop's serial number and network hardware address (MAC). This can help identify and track your laptop, and prove ownership if it's recovered.
