Password-change deadline for eIDs is Sept. 12
by Betsy Edwards, Information Technology Assistance Centerpublished Aug. 21, 2007
Wednesday, Sept. 12, is the deadline for changing passwords on K-State eIDs for the fall semester. The mandatory password change each fall and spring semester prevents long-term use of the same password, which is a known risk factor. That's also why passwords cannot be reused in a two-year period.
- To change your password: Sign in on the eid.k-state.edu website, click "Change your eID password", and follow the steps.
- Forgot your password? Call the IT Help Desk, 785-532-7722, and verify your identity. Staff can set a temporary password for you to sign in.
- For more about passwords, read the Password FAQs.
The password change applies to both individual and group eIDs. An e-mail reminder is typically sent to eIDs with unchanged passwords a week or two prior to the deadline.

3 new technology classrooms, more upgrades
by Tim Bagby, Information Technology Assistance Centerpublished Aug. 21, 2007
Three new basic technology classrooms were created this summer, with a place to plug in a laptop and use a projector -- Burt 114, Thompson 213, and Williard 25. Also this summer, technology enhancements were completed in Leasure 13 (which underwent facilities renovations in 2006). It now has common core technology -- a PC, document camera, DVD/VCR player, and sound system -- plus a PolyCom video conferencing system and Tegrity.
Graduate students: Electronic theses, dissertations, and reports (ETDR)
by Marty Courtois, Information Technology Assistance Centerpublished Aug. 21, 2007
Starting this semester, all graduate students are required to submit an electronic version of their thesis, dissertation, or report. Several resources offer information on ETDRs. The ETDR website (www.k-state.edu/grad/etdr) provides details on all aspects of creating, formatting, and submitting your ETDR. Templates are available for Word and LaTeX and include all formatting required by the Graduate School, as well as time-saving features such as automatically generated table of contents, list of tables, and list of figures. Students submit their ETDRs to the K-State Research Exchange (K-REx, at krex.k-state.edu). Visit the site to see ETDRs submitted by other K-State students.
For a thorough introduction to ETDRs, attend an ETDR Open Forum sponsored by the Graduate School. No registration is necessary. Upcoming forums are
- Thursday, Sept. 13, 4-5 p.m., Union Little Theatre
- Wednesday, Oct. 10, 4-5 p.m., Union Little Theatre
Contact the IT Help Desk if you have questions on using Word or other software to create your ETDR. Questions regarding graduation requirements, fees, etc., should be directed to the Graduate School.

Audio, video conferencing options on campus
by Sue White, Kansas Regents Networkpublished Aug. 21, 2007
The Kansas Regents Network in Bob Dole Hall operates and manages an audio conferencing system and a video conferencing network. Both are used for the electronic delivery of academic credit, training sessions, workshops, and a multitude of meetings -- board meetings, research collaboration meetings, committee meetings, administrative meetings, association annual meetings, etc.
The audio system, or telephone conferencing system (TeleBridge), has been in operation since 1970. The technology allows up to 72 ports, assisted or automated calls, electronic polling, assisted Q&A, and sub-conferencing. Conferees are now combining web presentation with conference calls.
The video network (TELENET 2) has 21 established Kansas locations. In addition to credit courses, the network is used for workshops, training sessions, dissertation defenses, job interviews, and all kinds of meetings. T2's capabilities extend beyond Kansas linking national and international sites in point-to-point conferences or multipoint with up to 20 sites linked simultaneously.
More information is available by calling our office (785-532-5995) or visiting the www.telenet2.org website.
Trend Micro security software now supports Windows Vista
by Harvard Townsend, IT securitypublished Aug. 21, 2007
Last spring, K-Staters were advised to delay buying computers with Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system, because the Trend Micro OfficeScan security software used at K-State did not support Vista. Over the summer, K-State implemented a new version of OfficeScan that fully supports Windows Vista, so Vista users can now comply with the IT policy that requires Windows users on campus to run Trend Micro OfficeScan. However, there may be other reasons to continue to delay deployment of Vista, like compatibility with the applications you run, so check with your IT support staff.
Apple Macintosh users on campus must run the Symantec AntiVirus software provided by K-State. Symantec AntiVirus and Trend Micro OfficeScan are both available to current K-State faculty, staff, and students at no charge and may be downloaded at antivirus.k-state.edu.

Voice-recording feature new in K-State Online
by Cathy Rodriguez, Information Technology Assistance Centerpublished Aug. 21, 2007
Now there's an easy way for instructors to incorporate audio into a K-State Online course. The recent upgrade to version 7.0 added a voice-recording tool that's located in Manage Files. The tool allows recording up to 20 minutes of audio.
To create a voice recording, do the following from the Manage Files tool:
- Select the folder where you want to create a voice recording.
- On the toolbar, click the New Item button.
- In the "Select a new item type to create" list, select Voice Recording.
- In the Recording Label box, type a name for your file.
- In the Audio Quality list, select the quality that
will work best for your class.
- Standard Quality: Smallest file size; will work for all users. Recording sounds OK.
- Good Quality: Will work for most users. Recording sounds good, like an FM radio.
- Superior Quality: Largest file size; will work for those using a broadband Internet connection. If connecting to the Internet with a modem, sound may be choppy and intermittent.
- Click the Record button to begin recording your audio.
- Click the Stop button when you finished recording your audio.
- Click the Play button to listen to your recording. If you aren't satisfied with the recording, press the Record button and record again. Recording again will overwrite the existing recording.
- When you're satisfied with your recording, close the Voice Recording page.
- Publish the link to make the recording available to your students.
