Security tip: Anti-spyware recommendations for Windows Vista

by Harvard Townsend, interim IT security officer
published May 29, 2007

Microsoft's anti-spyware product, called Windows Defender, is now included with Windows Vista to prevent, detect, and remove spyware. Spyware protection was not built into previous versions of Microsoft Windows operating system, so K-State's SIRT recommended using Spybot Search & Destroy for this purpose and to comply with K-State security policy (see the Spyware/Adware Protection section of PPM 3340).

SIRT revisited this recommendation in light of the integration of Windows Defender with Vista. Since no single anti-spyware tool will protect your computer from all forms of spyware and adware, SIRT still recommends running Spybot Search & Destroy on Windows Vista computers and all other supported versions of Microsoft Windows. The combination of Windows Defender, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Trend Micro OfficScan will provide effective protection against spyware, adware, and other forms of malicious software.
