Security tip: Use multiple anti-spyware/adware tools

by H. Townsend, interim K-State IT security officer
published Sept. 5, 2006

The new Trend Micro antivirus software purchased by K-State to help protect Microsoft Windows computers from virus and worm infections also has anti-spyware and anti-adware features. It is able to detect and remove many different kinds of these annoying programs that are a threat to your privacy and can dramatically slow down your computer's performance. However, there are so many forms of spyware/adware, and it changes so often that no single security software can detect and delete every kind.

K-State's Security Incident Response Team (SIRT) therefore recommends that, in addition to running the required Trend Micro security software, K-Staters should also use another anti-spyware tool to catch spyware and adware that Trend misses. SIRT recommends running the freeware tool Spybot Search and Destroy. Spybot is also available via download from iTAC's PC Software Downloads and on K-State's CatPack CD that you can get from iTAC in Hale 313. Install Spybot and run a scan at least every week to help keep your computer safe and working properly.

Turn off wireless in classrooms?

by R. Owens, Telecommunications
published Sept. 5, 2006

Is it possible to turn off wireless access in a classroom?

There are more than 600 wireless access points around the Manhattan campus. It is impossible to turn off wireless access for one room. Instead, faculty might consider adding a statement in their syllabus about the appropriate use of wireless devices during class.

Helpful tools: Adobe Bridge and InDesign Snippets

by S. Silva, Information Technology Assistance Center
published Sept. 5, 2006. updated 8:32 a.m. Sept. 6, 2006

Adobe Creative Suite 2 and Adobe InDesign have some helpful tools that K-Staters may find useful.

Adobe Snippets lets you save content -- be it layout guides, text, images, or a whole page full of content -- and then easily import it into another document, formatting and all. In Adobe InDesign, after you select the content you want to save as a snippet, do the following:

  1. Go to the File menu and click Export.
  2. In the Format box, select InDesign Snippet.
  3. Name the snippet and save it.

When you want to use the saved content, import it into a document by going to the File menu again and clicking Place.

Adobe Bridge is a program that comes with Adobe Creative Suite 2. It's like a fancy file manager for all CS2 projects. Adobe calls it a "creative hub". A special feature of Adobe Bridge is that it shows a thumbnail of all your Adobe projects, including your snippets.

From the Bridge Center, you can see recent files and folders being working on, get tips, access your snippets, or search for Adobe Stock Photos. For more information, see the Adobe Bridge webpage.
