by C. Loehr, K-State Student Union Computer Store
published Sept. 13, 2005

Apple's new iPod nano debuted Sept. 7. It has evoked high interest across campus, including 20+ pre-orders and a steady stream of customers asking about it. Demo units of the iPod nano are now available for viewing in the K-State Student Union Computer Store. Shipments of the new product should arrive by Friday, Sept. 16, for customer purchasing. Pre-orders are encouraged since interest in this new product is high.

iPod nano is available in 2-gigabyte and 4-gigabyte models, in black or white. It is flash memory-based rather than hard drive-based, has a color screen, and is very thin and small. For details, see www.apple.com/ipodnano. Education price is $179 for the 2GB model (500 songs), and $229 for the 4GB (1,000 songs). A comparison chart (PDF format) shows how all the iPod models stack up against each other.

Also on demo in the store is Apple's 30" Cinema Display for the next few weeks. Feel free to drop by and take a gander. This is one seriously big monitor. See www.apple.com/displays for details.

August updates to central university web servers

by B. Edwards, Computing and Network Servicesy
published Sept. 13, 2005

In August, several updates were made to K-State's central web servers. One of the least visible changes that had a big impact was the central website's content being moved to the university's Storage Area Network. This helps alleviate previous disk-space problems and also provides more expandable storage. It also makes K-State's web systems more redundant and reliable.

New web servers were added to support K-State Online and the university's new portal at connect.k-state.edu.

The September 11 Digital Archive

by A. Hagedorn, Information Technology Assistance Center
published Sept. 13, 2005

It has been four years since the attacks on 9/11. And while it is difficult for some to revisit that day, it is important that we do because it is part of our history. The September 11 Digital Archive is just one way in which we can remember.

Visit the site at www.911digitalarchive.org. The collection includes images, audio clips, and reports from Sept. 11, 2001. It was created by the American Social History Project/Center for Media and Learning at the City University of New York Graduate Center, and the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University.
