Committee recommends changing
K-State antivirus software

by the editors, InfoTech Tuesday
published July 26, 2005

Since March, a subcommittee of the K-State Security Incident Response Team has been reviewing the current antivirus contract as a routine function of the contract-renewal process. The committee, chaired by Steve Coulson, evaluated numerous antivirus products on the market in relation to the security needs of the campus. Yesterday, the committee recommended that for Windows operating systems, K-State transition from Symantec's AntiVirus to Trend Micro's OfficeScan. For Macintosh systems, the committee recommended continuing with Symantec's product.

A final decision will probably be made later this week. Input is needed from K-Staters as to the implications of this decision for campus units. Please send comments to steve@ksu.edu. More about the proposed product is on Trend Micro's OfficeScan site. Click on the "Download Evaluation Copy" link on the right side.

by the editors, InfoTech Tuesday
published July 26, 2005

Operation PC will once again take place in August for residence-hall students. During move-in days, students will bring their computers to designated locations (see the chart below) in Housing and Dining Services and

  • Install the latest versions of security software and Microsoft's Windows Update Service.
  • Run an anti-spyware program.
  • Check for weak passwords and update them as needed.
  • Register their computers through the NetSignOn process.

Residence-hall students must complete this process before they can access K-State's network and the Internet. This service is free to K-State students living in the residence halls.

Date Time Locations
Fri, Aug. 19 noon-8 p.m. Derby 133A/134
Kramer 121
Sat, Aug. 20 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Derby 133A/134
Kramer 121
Sun, Aug. 21 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Derby 133A/134
Kramer 121

Volunteers are needed to work on these dates. About 30 individuals have signed up to assist with Operation PC over the three-day period, but 60 more technical and functional people are needed. E-mail Royce Gilbert at royce@ksu.edu if you can volunteer on these dates.

A database is being created to collect information on the types of computers students are bringing to campus; a process is in place for computer repair; and training is being scheduled to train the staff. For more about Operation PC 2005, see the www.ksu.edu/InfoTech/operationpc website.

K-State Online version 5.5 to be released Aug. 6

by S. Finkeldei, Office of Mediated Education
published July 26, 2005

K-State Online will be unavailable all day Saturday, Aug. 6, for the latest upgrade to version 5.5. The upgrade will begin early that Saturday morning and is expected to take all day.

Updates will include a "Sign Out" button, one of the most requested improvements for K-State Online. Other improvements include:

  • Redesigns have been made on the navigation and organization of the instructor side, as well as the student view of courses.
  • The course homepage has been redesigned, and navigation has been moved to menus to allow for more instructor flexibility in content arrangement.
  • K-Staters can select from new themes when designing a course, including new color schemes as well as general and college-specific themes.
  • Design, security, and upload options of the Manage Files tool have been updated.
  • A completely revamped Help system is in place that is much easier to use and more complete, including improved search and a glossary.

A complete list of improvements and more information about K-State Online version 5.5 is available at public.online.ksu.edu/whatsnew.

Instructors must convert their content in K-State Online after the Aug. 6 upgrade. Before each course is ready to use, an important step must be completed to migrate your course content from the old system to the new one. Instructors will be prompted to complete this step when they access the Manage Files tool in each course for the first time. For a complete description of the course-content upgrade, see Manage Files Content Upgrade.

Training on using K-State Online is also available; see the iTAC Training Calendar.

What happens if I change my eID's password
before Aug. 1?

It won't count as a password change for the fall semester. You'll still have to change it between Aug. 1-Sept. 14, which is the password-change timeframe for this fall.

K-State Online: Tip of the Week

Set ground rules for chat sessions at the beginning of the semester. Briefly remind students of these rules prior to each chat session.

Some suggestions include:

-Respect the comments of all peers.

-We will allow time for all students to provide a response.

-Don't worry about spelling if your comment can be understood.

-If you are not certain about an answer, type in "excuse me" and ask your question.

-I will move onto a new question/topic by typing in "new question".

E-mail a suggestion or help areas for the K-State Online tip to help@online.ksu.edu. Questions? Contact the K-State Online Help Desk, 532-7722.
