Campus Ethernet cable cut
during maintenance June 16

by the editors, InfoTech Tuesday
published June 21, 2005

In preparation for steampipe removal and replacement last Thursday, June 16, some of K-State's Ethernet cable was inadvertently cut, including some single-mode and multi-mode cable. This cabling provided connectivity to the south end of campus. As a result, Anderson, Calvin, Fairchild, Holtz, McCain, Nichols, and Thompson halls were without network connectivity for parts of Thursday.

K-State Telecommunications and Southwestern Bell worked through the evening hours Thursday to restore multi-mode connectivity to those buildings by 10 p.m. Single-mode connectivity was restored on Friday.

K-State bids farewell to Nancy Calhoun in iTAC

by K-State IT staff
published June 21, 2005

[Editor's note: Faye Kennedy, Rebecca Gould, and Aimee Hagedorn contributed to this article.]

After 17 years of dedicated service for the university, Nancy Calhoun will retire on July 6, 2005. A retirement reception is set for 1:30-3 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, in the Flint Hills Room of the K-State Student Union.

When Nancy first began her career at K-State in 1988, she worked in Computing and Network Services (CNS) as a research assistant. Later she became part of the first consolidated help desk, now known as the Information Technology Assistance Center (iTAC). A majority of her time has been spent training university members on a variety of technical subjects, as well as helping to coordinate training for other K-State units.

Nancy is an invaluable member of K-State's IT team. As an employee, she has been described as "extremely knowledgeable and dedicated. She has always put in more time than what is required of her. Nancy is innovative, and a person who has good perception (in many ways)."

As a colleague, teacher, and friend, Nancy is understanding and supportive. You can always rely on Nancy to see things through.

In the nearly two decades of her employment, Nancy's list of achievements is impressive. Here are a few of the highlights:

  • Lead technology trainer for many years.
  • Development of database system for tracking individuals who have received IT training.
  • Original member of iTAC.
  • Collaborating with K-State Online team to troubleshoot K-State Online issues.
  • Public Relations Officer for Kansas State chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
  • Recipient of Meritorious Achievement Award from IT Awards and Recognition Committee in 2003 and 2005.

Thank you, Nancy, for everything you have done for K-State. You will be missed!
