Symantec ends Norton AntiVirus 7.x support
for Windows

by R. Cheung and T. White, Computing and Network Services
published March 29, 2005

Symantec will drop support of its Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 7.5 and 7.6 for Windows after March 31 (see Jan. 25 InfoTech Tuesday). Once NAV 7.x is no longer supported, those operating systems will have no protection from new virus threats.

If your computer is still running NAV 7.x, upgrade it immediately to the current version of Symantec AntiVirus (SAV CE 9.0.1.1000) which is on the antivirus download site. K-State policy requires current, effective, active antivirus software on all computers attached to the campus network (see the policy Security for Information, Computing and Network Resources).

K-State administrators can download and test the new version of Symantec AntiVirus (SAV CE 9.0.3.1000) prior to the public release. See the system administrators' SAV support page.

Questions about the upgrade should be directed to your departmental technical support, the K-State IT Help Desk, or your SIRT representative.

InfoCommons upgrades during spring break

by R. Satterlee, Computing and Network Services
published March 29, 2005

Several technology upgrades took place in the K-State InfoCommons during Spring Break. For starters, the six-plex computer pods on the second floor of Hale Library had an ethernet connectivity upgrade. These 48 computers east of the Reference Desk are now configured at 100 MB data speeds. This will result in better performance and stability for InfoCommons users, as well as improving the network infrastructure.

A UniPrint printstation with a new Hewlett Packard 8150 laser printer has been installed in the Weigel Library InfoCommons in Seaton 323. This printer configuration matches the current one in the K-State InfoCommons in Hale Library and the university computer labs. Students still have free printing ($10 per semester, $5 during the summer) available at these printstation locations. Additional printouts can be purchased at these locations using a K-State ID card.

April 12 Autodesk presentation

by K. Leonard, Computing and Network Services
published March 29, 2005

A new Autodesk product release is expected in late June and will be a comprehensive upgrade of the currently licensed products. Gary Regal, Autodesk regional education manager, and John Olson, Avatech Solutions education manager, will be on campus 10 a.m.-noon April 12 (Tue) in Hale 114 to provide an overview of the new products.

K-State has an ACES (Autodesk Comprehensive Education Solution) site license covering most Autodesk products. A consortium of K-State colleges and departments contribute annually to the $27,500 renewal fee.

Those interested in instituting student licensing of Autodesk products should also plan to attend the meeting. Olson would also appreciate the opportunity for site visits to units to see how the software is being used. Contact Kathy Leonard (532-4926, kantink@ksu.edu) to schedule site visits.

TEVAL and IDEA systems continue on paper
for spring 2005

by V. Clegg, Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning
published March 29, 2005

The paper version of the TEVAL Student Rating System will continue to be available during this spring semester. An online version of the TEVAL System is scheduled for introduction in the fall 2005 semester. At that time, both the online version and the paper version will be available, and faculty will be able to choose whether to use one or the other. The two paper versions of the IDEA System will continue to be available.

Note the following points for spring 2005:

  • The TEVAL faculty information form has been revised to include a new section for the faculty member's eID. This section must be completed before the evaluation can be processed. Failure to do so will simply result in a delay in processing the TEVAL report.
  • The content of the TEVAL report has not changed. However, the format of the report is somewhat different.

Where is K-State's graduation schedule?

K-State actually calls it the "commencement" schedule. You can easily find it by typing either "graduation" or "commencement" in the K-State Search box found on most webpages. Commencement schedules are maintained by the Registrar's Office, and are located at www.ksu.edu/registrar/c_d.

K-State Online: Tip of the Week

Group flexibility: Periodically rearrange group members or change the group structure for classes in which students work in small groups. You also can change group activities to best use the specific working dynamics of each course.

Some students are better at critical thinking, some at putting ideas into practice, some at writing the report, etc. A flexible or rotating group structure allows students to build on the strengths of others.

E-mail a suggestion or help areas for the K-State Online tip to help@online.ksu.edu. Questions? Contact the K-State Online Help Desk, 532-7722.

DCE creates new position of web team leader

by M. Sinn, Division of Continuing Education
published March 29, 2005

In February, Brian McKinney joined the Division of Continuing Education (DCE) at K-State in a newly created position of web team leader in the Public Information Office. McKinney graduated from K-State with a bachelor's degree in management information systems in August 2004.

As web team leader, McKinney will undertake a variety of responsibilities relating to the DCE website and will lead a group of student workers in maintaining the site. He will also evaluate the existing site, and plan and implement site improvements.

McKinney previously worked for DCE's Office of Mediated Education (OME) as a web developer. In that position he developed a management application used to track web projects. He also worked with DCE conference registration forms; created and edited hundreds of distance education webpages; and trained new employees to maintain conference registration forms and the DCE website.
