Start the new year with IT security

by the editors, InfoTech Tuesday
published Jan. 11, 2005

K-State's IT security site has become more visible for all K-Staters since it was recently added as a link on K-State's homepage. Visit www.ksu.edu and use the "Information Technology" drop-down menu to see the link.

Relatedly, this is a good time to start the new year with good habits to protect your computing environment, identity, and privacy. The first step is to make sure you have active virus protection (antivirus.ksu.edu) and all critical patches applied (Microsoft Windows Update service and the Apple Downloads site).

The university actively scans its network, and computers found to have vulnerabilities are blocked from the network.

Remember to change the password on your K-State eID by Feb. 9 at eid.k-state.edu. See the Password FAQs for details.

Departments: Interested in Macromedia purchase?

by R. Gould, Information Technology Assistance Center
published Jan. 11, 2005

K-State departments have expressed interest in yet another volume-purchase agreement for Macromedia products. From Jan. 11-31, the Information Technology Assistance Center will compile a list of departments interested in purchasing Contribute, Dreamweaver MX, Macromedia Studio MX, and all other Macromedia products. See the Feb. 17, 2004 article in InfoTech Tuesday for details about each of these applications.

Orders will be placed about Feb. 4, and departments will be billed when the products arrive. Prices are based on the number of total copies purchased so the more copies that are ordered, the lower the price per product. These are not full-box products. Media must be ordered separately.

K-State departments interested in participating in a volume-purchase agreement should e-mail itac@ksu.edu by Jan. 31 with

  • User's e-mail address and phone number
  • Office/delivery address
  • Departmental billing address
  • IDR# (Interdepartmental Requisition)
  • Product(s) you want to purchase
  • PC or Macintosh platform
  • Number of licenses being purchased
  • Number of media needed

Send questions to itac@ksu.edu. Departments that do not want to participate in this volume purchase can opt to follow K-State purchasing procedures to obtain products from the K-State Purchasing website. Minimum purchasing totals must be met in order to get the lowest cost per product.

Wildcat Information Network debuts for students

by C. Althoff, WIN project director
published Jan. 11, 2005

The Wildcat Information Network debuts Jan. 12 at win.ksu.edu as an Internet portal that's by and for K-State students on the Manhattan and Salina campuses. The portal will allow students to

  • create online communities
  • post to message boards
  • learn about local entertainment, restaurants, and more
  • participate in a virtual marketplace
  • receive regional and national news
  • play games
  • search for jobs

WIN is sponsored by the K-State Student Governing Association; managed entirely by a student-run development team; and delivers services not within the scope of university initiatives. It is also part of the SINAPSE project, a free, open source technology developed by students at the University of Oklahoma along with several partner schools. It uses and extends PHP and PEAR; follows web accessibility standards; has design driven by CSS; runs on a Linux platform; uses an Apache web server and mySQL database; and stores passwords using MD5 encryption.

Q/A on Large Account Reseller contract

by K. Leonard, Computing and Network Services,
and C. Dekat, Purchasing Office
published Jan. 11, 2005

The following questions/answers provide clarifications of the Large Account Reseller contract (State contract #07359) that was awarded to Software House International (SHI). Further questions should be directed to the Purchasing Office, 532-6214.

1. How do I get a price quote?
By telephoning 888-394-5232, faxing 888-394-5322, or e-mailing Kansas@shi.com. Check with SHI, as they have partnered with many companies not listed on their webpages. Purchases can be made via a purchase order or with a State Procurement Card. An additional 2.45 percent surcharge is assessed for using the procurement card, per addendum to the contract.

2. What if SHI cannot provide the products I need, or I find cheaper products elsewhere?
SHI is to notify you when they cannot supply the products you request or meet the price you have found elsewhere. Request an e-mail stating what item(s) they cannot supply and why. A copy of the e-mail should be attached when submitting the KSU Prior Authorization Form requesting the off-contract purchase.

3. Is there a minimum purchase requirement for Adobe products?
No. K-State signed a Contractual Licensing Program (CLP) agreement in December 2003 that is separate from other state agencies. Our minimum point purchase was met some time ago.

4. How do I ensure I get the correct pricing for my Adobe order?
Reference "CLP 3.0" and "Adobe CLP Number: ACE23DEC200300002040" when requesting a quote.

5. Is there a minimum point requirement for Macromedia products?
Yes, all Macromedia purchases require a minimum of 10 points. To the best of our knowledge, Macromedia products are the only products that require the minimum purchase. Periodically, iTAC coordinates a group order. This can assist departments not meeting the 10-point requirement on their own, and can result in large savings to all participating departments. See the Macromedia article in this issue.

6. Is there a price list for Macromedia products?
Contact SHI. They will look at the quantities and compare to shrink-wrap to see which is more economical for the end-user. For ball-park prices, use the "Academic-Macromeda-04.xls" link from the Macromedia page linked to the SHI Kansas website.

7. Should Microsoft products be purchased through the LAR?
No. K-State is under contract with Software Plus (Contract No. 05986) through March 31, 2006, for all Microsoft products.

On the spot:  IT questions from K-Staters
published Jan. 11, 2005

Why is my SSN used as my K-State ID?

Unique identification of individual students is essential to the mission of the university, and the use of Social Security Numbers on some forms of documentation is required by government regulations. K-State is making a concerted effort to request or present SSNs on documentation ONLY when its use is essential for governmental or university administrative purposes. A longer response will be provided in next week's issue of InfoTech Tuesday.

Questions about access to K-State IT resources can be sent to the IT Help Desk, 532-7722, helpdesk@ksu.edu.
