K-State Online: Tip of the Week

Log your chat session:  The text of your online chat session can be logged and archived for future review or published in your course to allow students who missed the chat session to see a transcript of what took place.

All messages in the Chat Room are saved in a file until you choose to log the Chat Room. Archiving the current chat log allows you to assign a name to the log file. All messages in the Chat Room since the last time it was archived will be saved into this log file.

K-State Online recommends that you log your Chat Room after each chat session so that you have an individual archive for each session. To log your Chat Room, enter File Management and go to the Archive folder. The button labeled "Log Chat Room" will walk you through the process of creating the chat archive file.

To suggest an area of help or other topics for the K-State Online tip, e-mail help@online.ksu.edu. Questions? Contact the K-State Online Help Desk at 532-0198.

KATS now using eIDs at web log-in

K-State enrollment for summer and fall semesters started March 31. That's also the date KATS began allowing eIDs at web log-in. KATS is the first central administrative system to use eIDs. The KATS website is at kats.ksu.edu.

Student ID/PIN combinations will continue to work through April. Starting May 1, only eIDs will be allowed for web log-ins to KATS. (Telephone access to KATS will still require SID/PIN combos.)

In the first 24 hours of enrollment, K-Staters used eIDs 3-to-1 over SID/PIN combinations (student ID number/personal identification number):

Web log-in to KATS # log-ins % of log-ins
With eID/password 3,048 72 percent
With SID/PIN 1,013 24 percent
With both 158 4 percent
Totals 4,219 100 percent

Security updates for K-State Online

Security was beefed up recently for K-State Online in accordance with new campus-wide IT security guidelines implemented in March. K-State Online is the university's course management system that delivers an interactive, web-based classroom to students.
  • K-State Online was moved to a server where all interactions between user and application are encrypted, a step that enhances already secure communication between the two entities.
  • Instructors exporting a course Gradebook or Roster now have the option to exclude student ID numbers (SID) from the list.
  • Information exported from the Gradebook and Roster will now be downloaded to the user's hard drive rather than sent as an e-mail attachment.

K-State Online is dedicated to providing a highly secure and up-to-date environment for the university's on-campus community and distance-education students.

UsableNet to present web accessibility seminar April 16

Are you still struggling with creating and maintaining accessible websites? Come to this seminar to hear what strategies have been working for others. UsableNet, a company which develops software tools and services that automate website usability and accessibility, will be meeting with the K-State community 1:30 p.m. April 16 in Fairchild 202. To register for this seminar, contact the ITAC receptionist, 532-4918, e-mail itac@k-state.edu.

There are two ways you can access KATS via the Web:

  1. To find your eID, visit the eid.k-state.edu website.
  2. Through April 30, you can still use your student ID number and PIN to log into KATS.

Send eID questions to eID@k-state.edu.
