E-mail risk: Greeting card from "member of family"

posted Sept. 22, 2005
Beware of fake greeting-card e-mails from "member of family". They contain a false link that downloads a program. If you run it, control of your computer is given to a stranger. The sad solution? Reformat your hard drive and reinstall all software -- including the operating system, security and antivirus patches, and all your programs.

New e-mail services coming in fall 2005

posted May 20, 2005
More new e-mail services are coming this fall!   Stay tuned to K-State's weekly information technology newsletter, InfoTech Tuesday. For a hint of what's coming, see the Nov. 2, 2004, article:   Is K-State's e-mail enhancement project finished?

German spam being filtered by central e-mail system

posted May 20, 2005
After large amounts of e-mail spam in German began arriving last weekend, K-State's central e-mail system was updated noon Monday, May 16, to automatically filter the spam to K-Staters' Junk folders. Messages more than two weeks old are automatically cleaned out of Junk folders, but K-Staters can also delete those messages at any time.

WebMail trash dump begins Dec. 8, 2004

Nov. 17, 2004
Beginning Dec. 8, K-State will automatically delete trash that is 14 days old in WebMail trash folders. To learn more about this and other e-mail best practices, see the new E-Mail Best Practices webpage. About 25 percent of K-State e-mail messages (over 144 gigabytes) are in trash folders on the central e-mail server. This equals more than 750 million pieces of paper.

Oct. 18 deadline for secure e-mail connectivity

Sept. 28, 2004
Starting Oct. 18, all e-mail client software are required to begin using secure connection (SSL) with K-State's central POP and IMAP e-mail servers. SSL encrypts your eID and password as the client connects to the server -- preventing unauthorized persons from intercepting this sensitive information -- and will also protect incoming e-mail from prying eyes.

Secure connection has been an option on the K-State system for several months. E-mail clients can be configured at any time to take advantage of it; see the documentation details in Configuring Your E-mail Client for a Secure Connection. K-State's WebMail service already uses SSL, so K-Staters don't need to adjust their computers to use WebMail securely. More details are in the Sept. 28 article in InfoTech Tuesday.

Junk folder auto-cleanout starts Sept. 6

Aug. 31, 2004
Starting Sept. 6, any e-mail in your Junk folder that is 14 days old will be automatically deleted. Since no spam filter is perfect, you should check your Junk folder on a regular basis to prevent the loss of any legitimate e-mail. For details, see Have you checked your Junk folder yet? in the Aug. 31 InfoTech Tuesday.

E-mail forwarding

Sept. 2, 2004
What happens to e-mail? is a chart put online Sept. 2 so K-Staters can see how virus checking, spam filtering, and RBLs affect e-mail that is delivered, forwarded, or routed to departmental mail servers.

IMAP vs. POP

Sept. 2, 2004
An IMAP-POP comparison chart was put online Sept. 2. K-Staters can see at a glance how these e-mail protocols handle issues such as Inboxes, folders, access speed, backups, WebMail, security, storage space, virus concerns, and spam filtering.

Central spam filtering starts Aug. 22

Aug. 17, 2004
K-State has been using spam-filtering software for the past several months on a trial basis to grade all incoming e-mail sent to central e-mail addresses. Starting Aug. 22, K-Staters will have the ability to configure their spam filter's sensitivity, custom-tagging rules, subject-field rewrite, acceptable languages, and the destination folder for spam. See the Spam filtering at K-State page. Starting Sept. 6, any e-mail in your Junk folder that is 14 days old will be automatically deleted.

WebMail upgrade Aug. 9

Aug. 3, 2004
K-State's WebMail service will be upgraded 7-8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 9. The enhanced service includes a new look and new features. See the WebMail page for details.

Realtime Block Lists

July 27, 2004
K-State began using Realtime Block Lists (RBLs) on Wednesday, July 28. For more information, see the July 27 article in InfoTech Tuesday and the RBL frequently asked questions.

2004 summer upgrade project

June 2004
K-State's central e-mail service is being upgraded this summer and is expected to be finished by the start of the fall semester. To keep up on what's happening, subscribe to EMAILUPDATE (a mailing list) and complete the instructions on the subscription webpage.

New features will include

  • A different web-based client with more options
  • Improved e-mail security, with encryption
  • Spam-filtering and virus-filtering
  • More complete support for K-State supported e-mail clients

Outdated e-mail addresses to be deleted July 1

June 2004
Outdated, official e-mail addresses at K-State ending in @ksuvm.ksu.edu and @ksu.ksu.edu will be deleted July 1.
