Using your BlackBerry with K-State e-mail

K-State Computing and Telecommunications Services now offers BlackBerry™ devices as a part of its cell phone service through US Cellular. For more information, see Cell phones.

Getting started

Before e-mail features can be activated, you must ensure that the phone has picked up the data service.

  • Look in the upper right corner of the screen by the signal strength indicator. You should see a 1X.
  • If the x is lowercase, then the phone hasn't picked up the data service yet.
  • If it is a capital X then data service should be working.
  • You should also see some data-related icons on the home screen including Internet Browser and links to Yahoo Messenger and Google Talk.
  • If the data service isn't working, try turning the phone off and back on.
Set up e-mail service

Once data service has been verified, you need to activate the e-mail service.

  1. Go to http://uscellular.blackberry.com. (You can do this on your BlackBerry, but you will likely find it easier on your computer.)
  2. Click Create New Account.
  3. It will prompt you for your BlackBerry's PIN and IMEI (also known as the ESN). These can be found on the box that your BlackBerry came in or by going to Options from the home screen (the icon looks like a wrench) and then choosing Status.
  4. Enter the PIN and ESN (hex) values.
  5. Next, it will ask you to choose a user ID and create a password. The e-mail address for your BlackBerry will be <userID>@uscellular.blackberry.com.
  6. It may take a few minutes for your BlackBerry to pick up the e-mail settings. Once e-mail is working, you can go to Messages and send and receive e-mail.
Receive K-State e-mail on your BlackBerry

You may have your K-State e-mail or other e-mail (gmail, hotmail, etc.) delivered to your BlackBerry.

  1. Go to http://uscellular.blackberry.com/ and log in with the user ID and password you chose above.
  2. Click Setup Account.
  3. Enter your K-State e-mail address, your K-State eID and your eID password. Please note that by doing this you are allowing your eID password to be stored by an external entity where the university has no control over it.
  4. If it worked, you will be directed back to the Email Accounts screen where it should now list your K-State e-mail address along with your uscellular.blackberry.com address.
  5. If it failed to automatically set up your e-mail account, it will present you with a screen asking how you access your e-mail:
    1. No matter what you actually use to check your e-mail, choose the option labeled I use Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express and click Next.
    2. If the next page prompts you to download something, skip it. You should now be at a screen where you can enter your information.
    3. Enter your e-mail address, your K-State eID and password and imap.ksu.edu for the server. For the server type select IMAP and check the Use SSL checkbox.
    4. Click Try Again. Now you should be back to the Email Accounts screen.
  6. Any new messages sent to your K-State e-mail address should now also be delivered to your BlackBerry.
E-mail delivery notes:
  • Delivery will not be instantaneous since the BlackBerry service only polls your external e-mail accounts every 10-15 minutes. However e-mail sent directly to your uscellular.blackberry.com address should be delivered almost immediately.
  • Note that all your old e-mail will not be delivered to your BlackBerry once you sign up. Only new messages that arrive after you add your K-State e-mail account to your BlackBerry service.
Deleting e-mail from your BlackBerry

Deleting e-mail on your BlackBerry will not delete it from your K-State inbox and deleting it from your K-State inbox will not delete it from your BlackBerry.

  1. To clear your BlackBerry inbox, use the navigation wheel to highlight one of the date separators in the e-mail list and then click it to bring up a menu.
  2. Find the Delete Prior option, select it and chose Delete in the confirmation dialog. This will delete all messages received on or prior to the selected day.
