Frequently Asked Questions
My Internet won't connect. I can't log into my e-mail account.
Make sure that you have established an internet connection with
your modem. Internet Explorer, Firefox and other internet
clients simply use an internet connection. They won't work if a
connection doesn't already exist. To make a connection, run your
Dial-In software. You'll probably hear your modem dial and make
noises as it establishes a connection. You should get a connection
notice in the form of two computers in the task bar.

My Dial-In software fails to make a connection. There seems to be a password problem.
First, make sure that you are using the correct eID and password.
If you have recently changed your eID password, make sure to
change it in the dial-in software as well. Also, passwords are case
sensitive, so be sure your caps lock key is turned off. Uncheck the
save password box , insure the caps lock key is off. Re-enter your
password. Then check the save password box and try again. If
you still cannot connect call iTAC at 532-7722 or Technical Support
at 532-7866.

What is the difference between my CTS Dial-In account and my K-State eID?
Your Dial-In account simply provides an internet connection. After
you have connected to the internet, you can run several different
clients to access services on the internet. For example, you can run
Firefox or log into your K-State eID by running a telnet
client. Your K-State eID gives you access to the UNIX computer
network on campus. It stores your email, and can also be used for
programming, running SAS, matlab and several other programs.
Most importantly, when making a Dial-In connection, you must use
your eID and eID password. Dial-In accounts are provided by
K-State Computing and Telecommunications Services in 109 East Stadium.
K-State eID's are provided by CTS. For more information about eID's please visit the
eProfile page.

My Dial-In software fails to make a connection. It reports no dial-tone.
Make sure that the phone line is properly plugged into your modem
and the phone jack in the wall. Many modems have two jacks built
into them. One is meant to run from the modem to your actual phone.
The other is meant to run from the modem to the jack in the wall.
The first might be labeled "phone" and the second might be labeled
"line". Make sure the line running from the wall is plugged into the
modem jack labeled "line".

My Dial-In software fails to make a connection. The computer I am dialing isn't answering.
You could be dialing the wrong number. If you are dialing from
on-campus (for example—a residence hall), you need to treat your
destination as an on-campus call. For example, you should use
5-9800. Otherwise, you should be calling
395-9800. If you need
to dial any special extensions to make a call, be sure you are using
them.

My Dial-In software fails to make a connection. It
reports that the modem is not responding.
Make sure that your Dial-In software is configured to use your
current modem. If you are using an external modem, make sure the
power cord is plugged into an electrical outlet, make sure the modem
is turned on, and make sure the modem cable is plugged into the
proper port on your computer.
Make sure Windows is talking to your modem properly. Use the diagnostic tool
built into Windows to check the modem. Go to the Windows Help menu for
instructions on how to do this.

My modem is rated to go faster than the connections
I get. What's the problem?
Computing and Telecommunications Services utilizes only 56K modems. Your connection
speed depends on your modem and the condition of the telephone
lines in your area. If your phone line is noisy, your modem will
negotiate a slower speed when it connects. This is especially true
with 33.6 and 56k modems. It is not uncommon for 33.6 and 56k
modems to get 28.8k connections. 56k modems are especially
sensitive to line noise. Typical connections are 48k and 50k,
however in extreme cases the performance may not be much better
than a 28.8k modem. If your problems seem out of the ordinary,
give us a call.
