Start Up and Shut Down Procedures

Screen
A screen is on the wall to the left of the podium. The screen is raised and lowered with the switches located on the wall under the blackboard about two thirds of the way to the right of the blackboard (if you are facing the blackboard). The left button lowers the screen and the right button raises the screen. The screen will stop 3-4 inches below the blackboard and may get caught on the chalk tray.

Projector: Epson (The unit is mounted in the projection room at the back of the room.)
Default: power off
The Epson can project images from the computer or through the Visual Presenter (Elmo).  The projection is set to 1024 by 768 pixels.

Media Link Controller The Extron Media Link Controller is located on top of the podium and controls what is displayed through the projector.  To turn it on press the "Display Power" button.  There is a blue LED light next to the projector that lights up when the projector has been turned on. This light will go out when the projector has been shut down.  A blue backlit display will show what items are available to be displayed through the projector. To turn the power off press and hold the "Display Power" button until power is turned off.  Note: it may take a moment for the machine to turn on/off.  The green light will flash once the lamp has been turned off.  After the green light is off, the blue back light on the Extron Media Link Controller will flash. If restarting the LCD projector, the entire shutdown sequence must take place before the projector will restart.

Power
Podium power should remain on at all times.  A constant power supply (UPS) has been installed to protect the computer from crashing in the case of a power failure. If the power goes out, go through the shut-down procedure as quickly as possible. Do not turn the UPS off.

External electrical outlet
There is an electrical power strip located on the left side of the center support of the podium for additional devices.

Computer Select "PC" on Media Link Controller
PC Default: power on (monitor will show start up process) Select the black button above "PC"  on the Extron media link controller. Faculty may store information on the I: drive under the "instructors" folder using individual folders for each class (e.g., BIOCH 750). Make sure no bare files are in the "instructors" folder, these will be deleted. The computer is equipped with a CD/DVD drive and front-accessible USB drive.

Macintosh Default: power off - Select "Macintosh" on Media Link Controller
The Macintosh is equipped with a CD-DVD Rom drive and a front accessible USB port. Faculty may store information under the "instructors" folder using individual folders for each class (e.g., BIOCH 750).

Portable computer- Select "laptop" on Extron Media Link Controller
External cables are provided for the audio, video, and ethernet connections. These cables are located inside the podium and should be placed back in podium when finished.

USB Mass Storage Device
The PC is equipped with a front-accessible USB (Universal Serial Bus) connection located at the front, bottom of the PC. To connect your device, insert the USB device firmly into the socket. It will be automatically detected and will exist as drive letter "G:" in the menu for the My Computer icon. When finished with using the device, stop the device by right clicking on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon located at the bottom of the display near the time clock. (The icon resembles a small card with a green arrow above it.) A dialog box will appear letting you know you may remove the USB device. Note: Be careful not to shut the podium door on your USB device while using this connection.

A USB Connection to the PC is located on the black "wedge," and is an identical connection to the G: drive.

Software aboard computers
IBM Pentium-Windows Operating System, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Plug-ins, Corel Office Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, Network connectivity tools, Netscape and Internet Explorer web browsers, Audio CD Player, and PC-DVD Player. Macintosh-Microsoft Office for Macintosh

Portable Mouse
A "Gyromouse" wireless mouse has been installed in this room.  It is stored on the shelf inside the podium. Please be sure to place it back on the cradle/charger when finished.  The green light on the unit is lit when the unit is working.  On a flat surface, the Gyromouse operates just like a regular, non-wireless mouse.  Simply place the device on a flat surface, move it to the desired position and use the left or right click function as you would on an ordinary mouse.
When operating the Gyromouse while holding it in free space, activate the cursor/pointer by clicking the trigger-like button underneath the unit.  While holding the trigger, position the cursor to the desired position and then release it.  To highlight multiple items, as in a spreadsheet, hold the trigger down and drag it across the desired cells until the area you wish highlighted has been captured.  Release the trigger and left or right click as necessary for the function you wish to perform.

Visual Presenter (Select "Document Camera" on Media Link Controller)
Default: power off
The Wolfvision is a camera projector for opaque materials, transparencies, slides, and negatives, as well as three-dimensional objects. Press the black button above "Document Camera" on the Extron Media Link Controller.  You will see output to both the computer monitor as well as from the projector unit.  The Wolfvision is equipped with sufficient memory to capture up to nine images and store for later use. To capture an image, once you have focused and zoomed the image, press one of the buttons 1-9 and hold it for two seconds. To access the stored image simply press the corresponding button that you used to save the image. To view a thumbnail of your saved images, press the "all" button. You can also rotate an image by 90 degrees using the image turn button.

DVD unit (with remote) - Select "DVD" on Media Link Controller
Default: power off
The DVD unit is located in the left door of the podium. The power switch is located on the front right side of the unit. To display the DVD image to the classroom, press the DVD button on the Extron Media Link Controller. To operate the DVD controls, press the blue DVD button on the unit's remote. The audio is controlled by a switch on the sound system in the small closet. If the DVD player is not functioning faculty may use the DVD program on the PC. The autoplay feature for the DVD software has been disabled on the PCs. To access the DVD program go to Start/All Programs/Cyberlink DVD and then launch the Power DVD Program. When using the PC to play DVDs, use PC volume control and not the DVD volume control.

Viewing monitor
Default: power on
Fluttering occurs on the screen if the equipment (ELMO, etc.) is not on!!!

Classroom lights
Bluemont 101 has a set of special controls for the lighting system. Controls for these lights are in two places:
(1) To the left of the slide projector controls.
(2) On the closet behind the podium.
Be careful; it takes a few seconds for the lights to reset. Use a very light touch on the switches. Pushing hard causes the control to malfunction. The control is very expensive to replace. A slow change occurs in the lighting when switching settings.
Settings range from full, bright lights to complete darkness, with several levels in-between. There are six settings available from the switch by the slide projector.
(1)  full lighting
(2)  turns off cans and dims the front bank, lowers most of the rest and dims the back row
(3)  dims the lights further
(4)  turns off front 3 rows and dims all others
(5)  all lights off
(6)  bottom switch is a rheostat (dim level switch) which can be moved up and down to change the level of dimming done by switches, #2, #3, and #4
There is a podium light available for use. This light is located above the podium and lights up the podium to help you see better. The switch is to the left of the slide projector controls and is a slide type switch. To turn the podium light on, slide the lever up. To turn the light off, slide the lever down. You can brighten or darken the amount of light that comes through the bulb by sliding the lever up or down.

Sound System
The sound system is turned on by a switch located in the closet behind the podium. Turn the sound on with the SHURE UHF power switch located toward the top right, above the tape deck. This switch controls the wireless microphone and the dual cassette deck. Each unit must be turned on manually.  A flashlight is in right side of the podium if you need additional light to view the controls. Sound for the computer is controlled through the computer. To change the volume, double-click on the speaker icon at the lower right of the screen for a master volume control. This will provide a mixer volume control.

Cassette Deck
Default: power off
A cassette deck is available for use.  The cassette deck is located in the closet behind the podium.

Podium Microphone
Default: power on when "Sound System" is on.
Use the switch on the base of the microphone to turn it ON/OFF.  You should be able to stand back and still be heard. You do not need to lean up toward the microphone.

Wireless microphones (clip-on microphone with cord to battery-pack unit and handheld microphone)
Default: power off
The wireless microphones are stored on the right side of the podium. The ON/OFF switch for clip-on mic is located by its antenna. The sound system can mix the audio from these microphones with any other sound input. When clip-on mic is turned on, the LED on top of the unit will remain lighted. There is an indicator on the front of the wireless that displays battery strength. It indicates "E" when there are bad or no batteries. If the batteries are getting weak, replace both AA alkaline batteries from the supply of batteries kept in the podium. Please mark old batteries with a sticky label marked "bad battery" and leave them in the podium. Wireless microphones should be turned off when not in use.  Place the units in the drawer when finished. Do NOT wrap the cord around the battery pack of the clip-on mic. Lay the unit down first, then gently lay the cord and microphone next to it.

Security

Bluemont has two designated entry points.

Security Access System
Entry to the technology classrooms is controlled by a central security access system. Each room will have at least one door designated as the entry point with a security access lock and indicator light.  There are two modes for each room, secure mode (red) and access mode (green).
Secure mode - During Secure mode the door cannot be pulled open. The security access system has the room in a secure state. If the room is entered motion, heat, and door sensors will send an alarm to the police.
Access mode - During Access mode the door can be pulled open. The security access system has been deactivated and people may enter the room without sending an alarm.

Please note: The door handle should not turn. If you can turn the door handle, please use your security key to lock it.

The security access system has two types of control, central control and security key control.
Central control will turn the security to access mode and back to secure mode on scheduled class days. The timing of the mode change will vary from day to day. On weekends and holidays, the classrooms will be in secure mode 24 hours a day.
Security key control will allow faculty to use their security key and enter the room when it is in secure mode. When central control has the room in access mode, the security key has no control.

The security access system lock is located beside the door and has green and red indicator lights. The indicator lights display the mode: green for access mode and red for secure mode.  To access the room when it is in secure mode, use the security key to switch the indicator light to green and to access mode. Enter room and work. When leaving the room, use the security key to switch the indicator light back to red and to secure mode.
