Wheat Genome Sequencing Pilot Project

Under the auspices of IGROW, we intend to submit a proposal to NSF outlining a 2-year pilot project to investigate strategies for sequencing the genic
regions in polyploid wheat. While we intend to investigate several strategies, one of our objectives will be tied to the Wheat Group-3 Consortium and entail the comparative sequencing of homoeologous BACs from the group-3 chromosomes to investigate the structural evolution of homeoloci. Because the group 3 chromosomes harbor many agronomically important genes, it would greatly benefit the wheat community for us to focus our comparative sequencing on BACs within these regions of interest. All sequencing will be coordinated with others who are also sequencing regions of the group-3 chromosomes to eliminate redundancy. The sequence that we generate will be made available immediately. While we intend to conduct comparative sequence analysis of BACs near genes/QTLs of interest, we do not intend to perform map-based cloning of the genes governing the traits, and instead feel that our sequencing efforts could potentially provide starting points for those who wish to do so. For those of you who are investigating traits on group 3 chromosomes and would like for us to sequence BACs in your region of interest, please contact Justin Faris (justin.faris@ndsu.nodak.edu) for further details.
