The mission of the International Grains Program is to provide technical
assistance in promoting and exporting cereal grains and oilseeds
and to assist with market-development efforts.
History
IGP was established in 1978 at the request of the Kansas wheat,
corn, grain sorghum and soybean commissions. The Kansas Legislature
provided funds to establish the program, and these funds are augmented
with funds from the those Kansas commissions. Funding is also received
from the wheat commissions of Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas.
IGP is housed in Kansas State University’s Department of Grain
Science and Industry. It was built upon international training programs
the department started conducting in 1961.
Activities
IGP organizes and sponsors activities that cover grain purchasing,
price analysis and risk management, wheat and corn milling, feed
processing, grading, quality, handling, utilization, and storage.
IGP plans and conducts short courses, educates trade teams and visitors,
and provides overseas technical assistance. Visiting lectures are
presented by international bankers, the U.S. grain trade executives
and agricultural producers as well as USDA grain inspection administrators,
and K-State faculty.
Partners
IGP works with the American Soybean Association, U.S. Grains Council,
U.S.
Wheat Associates, and USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service.
