PROJECT: Big 12 Engineering Project Why begin with Nuclear Engineering? Since 2001, The Big 12 nuclear schools and other nuclear programs around the country have experienced an increase in student demand for nuclear engineering education. This demand is directly coorelated to the increase in demand from nuclear-related industries, over half of whose employees educated in nuclear engineering and technology are scheduled to retire in the next fifteen years. However, many employers do not need degreed nuclear engineers, but, rather, engineers in other disciplines who have some level of education in nuclear engineering or nuclear technology. Benefits include: 1) Increases cost-effectiveness of higher education by sharing expertise and resources. 2) Gain new professional development opportunities through multi-campus peer interaction. 3) The program will also provide elective technical courses that might enhance degree program at the Big 12 schools, for instance in power engineering, in biomedical engineering, in chemical engineering, or the like. 4) Engineering students graduating from all Big 12 schools will have a more diverse background and be better equipped to address societal issues relating to nuclear science and technology. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
