Graduate Research Assistants
Good News! The
College and University Professional Association for Human Resources announced
that the Department of Labor would not assert an employee-employer relationship
between graduate research assistants (GRAs) and higher education institutions.
Accordingly, GRAs will not be subject to recordkeeping rules related to
the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Once programming changes can be made to HRIS, we
anticipate changing the FLSA status coding on GRAs from “E” (exempt) to “Z” to
indicate a non-covered employee. This is necessary to reflect the difference
between a covered employee who is exempt or non-exempt versus an employee who
is not considered an employee for FLSA purposes. The “Z” designation is for identification
purposes only and will not affect payroll in any way. No action from the departments is required
for this change.
Please contact Stephanie Harvey Vruwink, Classification Services, (785) 532-1868, if you have questions about this or the Fair Labor Standards Act.
