GTA/GRA Health Insurance
As you hire or reappoint graduate teaching assistants and/or graduate research assistants for the spring 2002 semester please advise each student about the available GTA/GRA health insurance plan. Persons appointed .5 FTE for two consecutive semesters as a graduate teaching or graduate research assistant are eligible to participate in the health insurance plan.

KanElect - 2001
Please remind your department employees who participated in the KanElect program in 2001 that they have until March 31, 2002 to submit claims for any services occurring between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2001.

Revised Form 8233 and New Tax Treaty for 2002
Form 8233, (Rev. December 2001) Exemption From Withholding on Compensation for Independent (and Certain Dependent) Personal Services of a Nonresident Alien Individual has been released by the IRS. Effectively immediately this form replaces the current 8233 that nonresident aliens (foreign nationals) are using to claim tax treaty benefits where applicable. The new form and the IRS instructions are available on the HR web page as well as the IRS website.

Effective January 1, 2002 a new treaty went into effect between the United States and Slovenia. This treaty covers both teachers/researchers and students. As a reminder in order for nonresident aliens to receive tax treaty benefits, Form 8233 and the appropriate Revenue Procedure Form 87-9 (teachers/researchers) or 87-8 (students) must be submitted to Human Resources.
