ELIGIBILITY:

To be hired as a graduate student employee, a person must be enrolled in the K-State Graduate School. Graduate student employees must be enrolled in at least six semester credit hours at K-State during the academic year and at least three semester credit hours at K-State during the summer session. (Enrollment is not required during the summer session for those enrolled in at least six semester credit hours at K-State during the preceding spring semester.) On an exception basis, the Graduate School may approve continued employment while enrolled in a reduced course load during the student's final semester.

SOCIAL SECURITY (OASDI/DIS) & MEDICARE(FICA-MHI) EXEMPTIONS:

Graduate student employees are exempt from Social Security and Medicare taxes while enrolled in at least six credit hours at Kansas State University during a fall or spring semester or three credit hours during the summer session. Graduate student employees with F-1 or J-1 visas are not subject to these taxes. If, on an exception basis, the Graduate School approves a reduced course load in the student's final semester, the student qualifies for Social Security and Medicare tax exemption.

MAXIMUM TENTHS TIME(FTE):

Graduate Research Assistants (GRA) are appointed as unclassified 12 or 9 month FLSA non-covered employees. Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA) are appointed as unclassified 12 or 9 month FLSA exempt employees. Graduate Assistants (GA) are appointed as unclassified 12 or 9 month FLSA nonexempt employees. A graduate student may be appointed to more than one graduate position at a time as long as the combination of the graduate appointments does not exceed .5 FTE. Effective June 13, 1999, a person holding a graduate appointment is limited to holding concurrent graduate appointments and/or hourly student appointments. A graduate student employee is limited to working a maximum of 10 hours per week on a concurrent hourly student appointment.

Graduate student employees are appointed by submitting the following documents:

COMPENSATION:

Graduate Research Assistant and Graduate Teaching Assistant students are paid a biweekly rate rather than an hourly rate. However, they still follow KSU's minimum wage requirements and must be paid a biweekly rate that equates to an hourly rate that is no less than $6.50 per hour effective August 12, 2007. Effective August 31, 2003, Graduate Assistant students are paid an hourly rate rather than a biweekly rate. The Council of Deans along with the Graduate School has established minimum compensation levels of $3,750 per academic semester for master's degree students on 0.5 FTE appointments and $4,250 per academic semester for doctoral students on 0.5 FTE appointments.

There is no maximum wage. Graduate student employees are paid biweekly on the same pay schedule as all other employees. Paychecks are mailed or direct deposited into any financial institution.
