New Hires (benefit eligible with contract)

Guidelines
  • Regular Appointments
    • "Regular" means the employee is being appointed to a regular budgeted position.
    • Regular faculty appointments may be either for the academic year (nine months) or for the fiscal year (12 months).
    • All initial regular appointments must have a contract indicating probationary, regular or tenured.
    • New contract needed for regular appointments when changes are made to FTE or salary if not done at beginning of fiscal year for 12 month or academic year for 9-month employees.
    • Regular employees are benefit eligible when employed .5 FTE or more.
    • All 12-month regular employees accrue sick and vacation leave.
    • All 9-month regular employees accrue sick leave 
  • Term Appointments
    • "Term" means the employee is being appointed to a regular budgeted or non-budgeted position
    • Term faculty appointments may be either for the academic year (nine months) or for the fiscal year (12 months)
    • All term appointments and reappointments require a term contract
    • New contract is required for term appointments with any change of conditions (FTE, length, salary)
    • Persons on term appointments are benefits-eligible.

Temporary Appointments

Guidelines
  • "Temporary" means the employee is being appointed to a temporary non-budgeted position.
  • Employees in temporary positions are never benefit eligible.
  • Temporary appointments must be less than .5 FTE or for no more than 90 days if .5 FTE or greater.
  • No contract is required on temporary appointments
  • 12 month temporary appointments can start any time but must end 12 months from appointment or earlier. If they begin with fiscal year, they will end with the fiscal year.
  • 9 month temporary appointments can start any time but must end 9 months from appointment or earlier. If they begin at academic year, they will end with the academic year.

Reappointments

  • Appointment Form (PER-38) must be submitted for temporary reappointments with a break in service, along with a new contract for those employees on .5 FTE or more for more than 90 days.
  • Reappointments without a break in service are to be submitted on the Change or Separation Form (PER-39), along with a new contract for those employees on .5 FTE or more for more than 90 days.
  • No contract is required for reappointments of less than 90 days of .5 FTE or more, but two consecutive reappointments of this nature will require a contract.
  • Note:  The "Employee Oath" must be completed on the rehire transaction if there has been a break of 30 days or more.  The employee must sign the "Employee Signature" section if there has been a break of one year or more.

Guidelines
  • Adjunct appointments are made for the benefit of the University to allow people from outside the University to contribute to its academic program.
  • Adjunct appointments are usually without compensation.
