The K-State Honor System staff, Honor Council,
and the Honesty and Integrity Peer Educators (H.I.P.E.), welcome you
and your student to a new school year! We are proud of the many traditions
K-State carries, and we hope your student will have a great experience
here.
A very important and well known fact is that K-State
maintains a high standard of academic integrity. It is with this in
mind that we are pleased to introduce you to the K-State Honor &
Integrity System, a system modified, but similar to the military honor
codes. When students sign application forms for admission to the university,
they are also signing contracts to abide by the K-State Honor Pledge.
The K-State Honor Pledge states, “On my honor, as a student, I
have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this academic work.”
As much as we don’t want to acknowledge
the fact that student cheating occurs, Don McCabe, a prominent researcher
in the field of academic integrity who has conducted two surveys at
K-State, suggests it is becoming more and more prevalent. During the
2006-2007 school year, K-State faculty and students reported 116 violations
of the Honor Pledge.
Students “coming through the System” often express they
wish they had paid more attention to this message, or at least understood
the consequences of their decisions. As you can see, it is very important
for you to remind your student that K-State does have an Honor &
Integrity System and that violations of the Honor Pledge will be taken
seriously.
We hope you will take the time to browse the KSU
Honor system web pages, where you will find an abundance of information
regarding the policy and procedures. If you have any questions, we urge
you to contact any of the people associated with the Honor System, or
call the Honor System Office at 785-532-2595.
