Guidelines for HIPE Presentations
Use these guidelines whether you are presenting to
a class, a campus organization, a sorority or fraternity, a residence hall
audience, or an audience of faculty. The more that the message is the same,
the more students and faculty will know what to do or how to live within the
Honor System.
Taking Care of Business
- Before you start
- Give instructor the feedback sheet and explain how to mail back (fold/CAMPUS)
- Give students/audience sign-in sheet (let them know it is only for HIPE
accountibility)
If you have only 5 to 10 minutes
- Who you are
- Introduce yourself as a KSU student just like those listening
- Give your classification (fresh/soph/jun/sen)
- Give your College and major (Education/Secondary Ed)Explain the mission
of HIPE--to educate about Honor System
- Talk about your responsibilities as a HIPEr
- Serve as student Advisor to alleged violators (students going through
the System)
- Make presentations to educate the campus community (organizations, classes,
faculty)
- Speak up in classes about the Honor System
- Educate new faculty two-on-one
- Talk BRIEFLY about what happens when there is a violation of the Honor Pledge
- Faculty have 2 options, in both cases must send Honor Pledge Violation
Report to Director
- If Honor System case, Director assigns Case Investigators (1 student,
1 faculty HC member)
- Hearing Panel (1 non-voting Chair, 2 faculty, 3 students--student majority,
judged by peers)
- Leave the door open
- Give KSU Honor System web site (http://www.ksu.edu/honor)
- Give contact info (Office--215 Fairchild, Phone #--532-2595, Email address--honor@ksu.edu)
If you have 30-60 minutes
- Who you are (above)
- Talk about Honor System history
- 1994 cheating episode with national exposure
- Students were major force behind Honor System
- Talk about Honor System process
- If you have Internet capabilities use the HS web site to show procedures
- Emphasize the critical and shared role of students with faculty in the
whole process
- Use scenarios to facilitate discussion
- Use scenarios from Helene's dissertation OR make up your own
- Involve students in a healthy "debate"
- Emphasize the lack of "cut and dry" rules in many situations
and the importance of ASKING
- Report the two most reported violations--plagiarism and unauthorized
collaboration
- Talk about HIPE
- Membership
- Your responsibilities (above)
- Leadership class
- Leave the door open (above)
Back at the office
- Fill out the presentation review sheet (in a binder in the office)
- Make a request to Camilla Roberts that a thank-you letter to be sent out
