Honor and Integrity Peer Educators

Advisor Role and Responsibilities

Honor & Integrity Peer Educators (HIPErs) are vital members of the Honor & Integrity System (H&IS). HIPErs have two main missions--educating the campus community about the H&IS and serving as advisors to students who "come through the System." HIPErs are knowledgeable about the procedures, but even more are confident that they know who and where to go for help in assisting students.

Educating the Campus Community

First, it is up to each HIPE member to navigate often through the H&IS web site, gaining more and more knowledge with each trip. Learning about the procedures and terms makes it easier to talk about the H&IS. When it is easier to talk about the H&IS, it then becomes easier to make presentations. YOUR job is to learn the material. OUR job, through professional development sessions, is to help HIPErs put it all together. We do this with hands on role-playing and discussions.

Basically, the H&IS PowerPoints, found in the HIPE section of the web site, help reinforce the material. Practice by going through the PowerPoints as well as navigating through the total H&IS web site. During the professional development sessions, you will have the opportunity to make presentations to each other until you feel comfortable enough to make them to your peers or new faculty.

Serving as HIPE Advisors

HIPE Advisors have a special part in the H&IS process. HIPErs are paired with students who are reported to the H&IS office (Alleged Violators or AVs). HIPE Advisors meet with or have e-mail conversations with AVs, attend investigation meetings, and attend hearings. HIPErs are advisors and not advocates. HIPErs disseminate information about procedures to be followed.

During the professional development sessions, you will have the opportunity to learn how to be an Advisor. You will also have the opportunity to serve as a HIPEr-in-Training before you are assigned to a case as a solo HIPE advisor.
