Friends of History
Supports instructional equipment, outside speakers, faculty, student research, and
departmental events and activities that enhance the educational "quality of life"
for history students.

Friends of the Chapman Center for Rural Studies
The Chapman Center for Rural Studies is committed to researching, preserving, and
sharing the history of rural Kansas. Through the establishment of a research lab,
archives, curriculum, and publications the Chapman Center links the community of learners
at Kansas State University with the communities of the past. The stories and lives
of all peoples who shaped the history of this region are significant; and as a premier
land-grant institution, Kansas State University supports and encourages the recovery
of lived experience, lost towns and settlements, original lands, and changing landscapes.

Undergraduate Scholarships
Robert D. Linder History Scholarship
Established by friends and former students of University Distinguished Professor Robert
Linder, this fund currently awards two scholarships annually to outstanding history
majors. Our goal is to grow the fund to a level that would allow the award of four
renewable scholarships annually.

Josie S. Sanders Memorial Scholarship in the Department of History
Established to honor the memory of Josie Sanders, a fervent champion of higher education
and the late wife of Professor Charles Sanders. Preference for this scholarship is
given to incoming freshman history majors.

Leo and Irene Chapman Excellence in History Scholarship
This scholarship goes to the outstanding senior history major, and was established
by KSU history alumni Mark Chapman in honor of his parents.

Golda M. Crawford History Scholarship
This scholarship is designated for junior majors in history, and was established to
honor Professor Golda Crawford, a legendary history teacher who taught at KSU for
over thirty years.

Lois B. Turner Memorial Scholarship
Established in memory of Lois Turner, a KSU faculty member from 1943 to 1967, this
scholarship is designated for outstanding history majors, with preference for those
who graduated from a Kansas high school.

Ada Billings History or Humanities Scholarship
Ada Billings was an early master's graduate of the department. Established in her
memory, this scholarship is open to outstanding history upperclassmen and graduate
students.

Graduate Awards and Fellowships
James C. Carey Graduate Student Research and Travel Fund
Established in memory of James C. Carey, the department's long-time specialist in
Latin American history and author of a history of KSU. The award is designated for
research travel for both master's and doctoral students.

Kenneth W. Jones Graduate Student Travel Fund
Established in memory of Kenneth Jones, late University Distinguished Professor and
the department's South Asian historian for over thirty years. The award is designated
for doctoral student travel for research or attendance at professional conferences.

Leroy E. and Mary Sullivan Page Fund for Graduate Students in History
This award was established by the children of Leroy and Mary Page in memory of their
parents. Professor Page was the department's historian of science for a quarter century;
Mary Page was a distinguished nursing educator. The award funds doctoral student travel
for research outside the state of Kansas.

Robin Higham Military History Graduate Student Research and Travel Fund
Established to honor the achievements of Professor Robin Higham, the department's
senior military historian for over thirty-five years. The award funds the travel of
doctoral students in military history for research or for attendance at professional
conferences.

A. Bower Sageser Memorial Scholarship
Established in memory of Professor Sageser who taught American history at KSU for
over twenty years. The scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate student recognized
for excellence in teaching.

Ina Belle (Wilson) Mueller Scholarship for Graduate Research in History
Established by Colonel Harrie Mueller in memory of his wife, this scholarship is awarded
to graduate students whose thesis or dissertation relates to the history of Kansas.

Colonel Peter Cullen Military History Fellowship
Established by alumni Mark Chapman in memory of Colonel Cullen, an MA recipient of
the department who had a distinguished military career. This fellowship funds doctoral
student research in military history.

Anne S. Higham Memorial Outstanding Military History Graduate Student Award
This fund was established in memory of Anne Higham, mother of Professor Robin Higham.
It provides an award to the student designated annually as the department’s outstanding
graduate student in military history.

History of the West
Homer E. Socolofsky Western History Fund
Established to honor the late Professor Homer Socolofsky, the department's long-time
historian of Kansas and the West. The fund provides for departmental activities pertinent
to western history.
