Advising
History majors are required to schedule an appointment with their Department of History advisor. The "advisor hold" on your iSIS account will not be lifted until you complete this appointment. The instructions below are provided to ensure that your appointment is as productive as possible.
- In order to ensure that the information on course availability and other options will be current, appointments with advisors may be scheduled no earlier than 48 hours prior to the time you will be allowed to enroll. Your enrollment time will be clearly displayed in the Student Center of iSIS. Courses for the spring semester and a current copy of your DARS report may also be viewed through your iSIS account.
- All advising appointments must be scheduled through the Department of History office. You may schedule your by stopping by the office in Eisenhower 208, or by phone at 785-532-6730. Advising appointments may not be scheduled via email.
- The courses available for next semester are now posted at: http://courses.k-state.edu/spring2012/. Using this listing, you should begin to put together your anticipated class schedule in preparation for your appointment with your History Department advisor.
- Additional advising resources are available on the History Department's Web site:
http://www.k-state.edu/history/advising.html
Forms at this site include the template for a B.S. and B.A. degree in the College of Arts & Sciences; the template for History majors, double-majors, and minors; a chart that explains the distribution requirements for 500-level History classes; and an explanation of the University General Education requirement.
ADVANCE PREPARATION IS ESSENTIAL FOR EFFECTIVE ADVISING
Do not arrive at your advising session empty handed. Use the forms in the Advising section of the History Web site to complete a draft schedule of classes for the upcoming semester(s) before meeting with your advisor. Ensure that the courses you wish to schedule are open and bring your draft schedule to your appointment.
Below you will find some important facts you should know about
enrollment through iSIS:
- Pre-requisites are enforced by the iSIS system. If you do not have
the pre-requisites for a course, you will not be able to enroll in it.
- iSIS also incorporates a wait list feature. When a class closes, you
may add your name to the wait list for that class. As spots open in the
class, iSIS will automatically enroll the first person on the wait list.
- iSIS does not generate any notice that a student has been moved from
the wait list into the class. So, if you are on a wait list, you must
periodically check your course schedule to see if you have been added to
the class. If you have not been added to the class, iSIS will display
your position on the list.
- iSIS will not allow you to schedule more than 21 hours. If you are on
the wait list for a class, those hours will be counted toward the
21-hour limit just as if you have already been added to the class.
- iSIS will not allow you to enroll in two classes that meet at the
same time (or overlap in meeting times). Again, if you are on the wait
list for a class, iSIS will treat it the same as if you were in the
class. You cannot be enrolled in a class and on the wait list for
another class that meets at the same time.
- iSIS will also not allow you to enroll in more than one section of a
class, and this includes classes where you are waitlisted. You cannot,
in other words, sign up for an open section of a class at the same time
that you are on the wait list for a closed section of the same class.
Advising queries are welcome anytime. Contact your Department of History advisor. If you do not know how to contact your advisor, phone the Department of History office at 785-532-6730. We look forward to seeing you soon.
