WHEATS

Welcome to the homepage for WHEATS:
A Workshop in the History of Environment, Agriculture, Technology and Science

What in the world is WHEATS? It is a moving annual workshop where PhD students from across the nation compete for one of nine slots, aimed to bring the most promising young scholars in these related fields together for a full weekend of discussion, constructive criticism and socializing. In keeping with the tradition of the workshop which was launched by Deborah Fitzgerald and her students at MIT several years ago, WHEATS participants give a twenty minute summary of their paper—made available online several weeks before—and then take questions and comments from the audience. Topics range widely—from the Rebel Plants of the Confederacy to the Diamond Mines of Angola Africa. The host institution covers the cost of the participants’ travel, lodging and board. In exchange, the participants agree to engage one another and their hosts in the best conversation possible and to chart new areas for research and publication.
