    The 2002-2006 Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Science Education Program

    KSU Undergraduate Research Scholars Program

    The goals of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Undergraduate Research Scholars program at KSU are two-fold:

    1. To encourage highly qualified students to pursue careers as Ph.D's or M.D.'s in biomedical research.
    2. To provide such students with the faculty guidance and financial support to obtain both an early and in-depth research experience.

    There is a competition in January of each year to identify a new class of HHMI Undergraduate Research Scholars.  Students so named are chosen on the basis of academic performance to date and an expressed interest in participating in biomedical research and undertaking post-graduate training in this field.Students agree to engage in 450 hours of research each year and must present their work at the annual Undergraduate Student Research Forum.They receive stipends of $3500 plus research and travel support.

    Fourteen freshman and sophomore students were selected as HHMI Undergraduate Research Scholars in January 2003.  The 2003 scholars were:

    Ethan Baughman, Kourtney Bettinger, Bronwen Bridge, Jessica Engler, Nathan Heckerson, Katrina Kiefer, Dustin Kruse, Amy Misak, Sheena Nagaraja, MacKenzie Ostmeyer, Jennifer Ranum, Patrick Simpson, Tiffany Tinkum, Mary Ward

    The 2004 class of HHMI Undergraduate Research Scholars were selected in February 2004.  These scholars were:

    Kaylee Cocke, Rachel Eddy, Meg Fasulo, Chad Geri, Wade Greening, Erica Hutfless, Kyle Jansson, Daniel Kuhlman, Samuel Lobell, Rachel Louis, Chad Maurer, Bridget McGuire, Ashley Smit, Suzanne Steffens, Maria Wittman, Stepanie Yeager

    The 2005 class of HHMI Undergraduate Research Scholars was selected in February 2005.They were (with majors and hometowns listed in parentheses) are:Alyson Adams (Biology; Manhattan), Jennifer Buseman (Biology; Overland Park), Ashley Casey (Biology; New London, MO), Leah Cox (Biology; Halstead), Michelle LeCluyse (Biology; Leawood), Jason Manes (Biology; Kanopolis), Allie Moore (Biology; Oberlin), Lauren Philips (Biology; Olathe), Bethany Powers (Biology; Thayer), Laura Snyder (Biology; Ponca City, OK), Jessica Strafuss (Biology; Collierville, TN), Amy Twite (Chemistry and Microbiology; Olathe), Cole Worley (Biology; Conway Springs), and Alison Young (Chemical Engineering; Effingham).

    Nine freshmen and sophomore students were selected as the 2006 class of HHMI Undergraduate Research Scholars in February 2006.  These students are (with majors and hometowns listed in parentheses) are:  Michael Albrecht (Microbiology and Music; Herington, KS); Tamara Fischer (Microbiology; Olathe, KS); Stacy Johnson (Biology; Concordia, KS); LeAnn Kearney (Biology; Wakarusa, KS); Jenna Kennedy (Biology; Hoxie, KS); Leah Kuhlman (Biology; Kensington, KS); Renee Lackey (Microbiology; Sabetha, KS); Kerry Alyssa Mattox (Biology; Tecumseh, KS); and Austin Rogers (Biology; Derby, KS).

    The 2007 Scholars include:  Aubrey Bamford (Biology and Pre-Health, Wichita), Kyle Crow (Biology and Spanish, Shawnee), Ryan Gallagher (Microbiology, Olathe), Diana Hylton (Biology/Nutrition Science, Tecumseh), Olga Martinez (Biology, Dodge City), Mathew McGowan (Microbiology, Shawnee), Mark McHaney (Biology, Manhattan), Will Poulson (Biology, Leawood), Jennifer Stegman (Biochemistry, Salina), Maureen Ty (Microbiology, Manhattan), Jacob Willis (Biology, Overland Park).

    Precollege and Outreach Component

    GOAL: Develop classroom learning modules and activities that integrate scientific research

    ACTIVITIES:

    Expected Outcomes:
    Graduate tuition, room and board will be provided in addition to a small laboratory supply budget.Stipends of $1,500 will be paid to participants to help cover additional expenses.
