1. To encourage highly qualified students to pursue careers as Ph.D's
or M.D.'s in biomedical research.
2. To provide such students with the faculty guidance and financial
support to obtain both an early and in-depth research experience.
There is a competition in January of each year to identify a new class of HHMI Undergraduate Research Scholars. Students so named are chosen on the basis of academic performance to date and an expressed interest in participating in biomedical research and undertaking post-graduate training in this field.Students agree to engage in 450 hours of research each year and must present their work at the annual Undergraduate Student Research Forum.They receive stipends of $3500 plus research and travel support.
Fourteen freshman and sophomore students were selected as HHMI Undergraduate Research Scholars in January 2003. The 2003 scholars were:

The 2004 class of HHMI Undergraduate Research Scholars were selected in February 2004. These scholars were:

The 2005 class of HHMI Undergraduate Research Scholars was selected in February 2005.They were (with majors and hometowns listed in parentheses) are:Alyson Adams (Biology; Manhattan), Jennifer Buseman (Biology; Overland Park), Ashley Casey (Biology; New London, MO), Leah Cox (Biology; Halstead), Michelle LeCluyse (Biology; Leawood), Jason Manes (Biology; Kanopolis), Allie Moore (Biology; Oberlin), Lauren Philips (Biology; Olathe), Bethany Powers (Biology; Thayer), Laura Snyder (Biology; Ponca City, OK), Jessica Strafuss (Biology; Collierville, TN), Amy Twite (Chemistry and Microbiology; Olathe), Cole Worley (Biology; Conway Springs), and Alison Young (Chemical Engineering; Effingham).
