Discipline and Absenteeism

Course Code:  WTD129

Course Name:  Discipline and Absenteeism

Prerequisite:  None

Department:  Human Capital Services

Length of Session:  3 Hours

Audience:  New administrator, department head, or Student Life staff member

Session Description:  As a supervisor, eventually you will need to counsel or discipline an employee — whether it's for poor performance or unacceptable behavior. Techniques presented in this session can turn around these problem situations, saving both you and the employee from a somewhat polarizing experience. In addition, appropriate coaching can save the university its considerable investment in the employee and reduce the risk of legal repercussions. Step by step, you will learn to effectively coach employees and avoid the drain of sub-par performance and improper conduct.

Session Objectives:  As a result of this session, participants will:

  • Identify the most common disciplinary problems that supervisors face and why supervisors avoid disciplining
  • Understand university guidelines regarding university support staff attendance and the four-step discipline procedure
  • Administer an effective coaching session with an employee as well as advocate employees with personal problems to an employee assistance program (EAP)
  • Respond with confidence to the formal appeal of a decision to suspend, demote, or dismiss
  • Conduct effective conversations with employees about leave issues and dispel common myths about absenteeism and sick leave
