-Aluminum Cans Help Build Homes-

The last few years KSU Habitat For Humanity has been participating in the program “Aluminum Cans Help Build Habitat For Humanity Homes.” The program’s design is a partnership with the Aluminum Association of America and Habitat to raise money to build homes. Basically, we collect cans, recycling them, and use the money to build. The KSU chapter of Habitat has partnered with the fraternities of KSU and their members to help collect these cans. Two of our officers recruited the fraternities and delivered boxes to each house to make collecting cans more convienent. Our goal is to have boxes in every fraternity and sorority affiliated with Kansas State. Currently we are trying to collaborate with other organizations and businesses to expand our program, and maximize our donations towards building new homes.

-Can Collection-

This year H4H recycling has become much more efficient by spliting up into teams. Each team is responsible for their own route, which typically includes 2-3 different pick up sites. We coordinate with the fraternities to determine how many boxes are needed, what time, and and how often the cans need to be collected. There is always a need for volunteers to help recruit new locations, and/or help with picking up the cans. The dorms on campus don't currently have a recycling program, but with more volunteer help we hope to include them in the expansion of our program. It's a lot of work to get the whole thing organized and running smoothly, but once everything is set up it requires just a little extra time that really helps provide for families in need.

-KSU vs KU Aluminum Challenge-

KSU Habitat and Manhattan Habitat for Humanity team up for the KSU vs. KU Aluminum Challenge. This contest paired up Kansas State University and Manhattan Habitat with the University of Kansas and Lawrence Habitat to see who could collect the most cans. A lot more people pay attention to recycling their empty cans when they have the motivation of beating their rival school. The Challenge is coming up soon, and I know that KU is serious about their aluminum...so be prepared! Last year the two schools collected over 7000lbs of aluminum, with all the proceeds going to H4H.
