Spring 2002 Industry Tours
In the spring 2002 semester, the GROW Project hosted industry
tours for middle school girls. The girls visited with women
who work in each company in a science, math, engineering or
technology position.
February 15th:
HNTB has been
around since 1914, known and respected for their work in transportation,
bridges, aviation, architecture, urban design and planning,
environmental engineering, construction services and design-build.
Founded in 1910, Hallmark
has 25,000 full-time employees. I bet you don’t know
that they employ chemists, engineers and all sorts of technologists,
in order to create and support the many products they market
and sell such as: CRAYOLA, Silly Putty, and Irresistible Ink.
March 18th:
Consolidated
Container Company has long produced all the plastic packaging
for Procter and Gamble, making bottles for dishwashing liquids
(Dawn, Joy, Ivory), liquid Cascade, Pantene, Head & Shoulders,
Olay Body Wash, Olay moisturizers, Sunny Delight, etc. They
have a great technology that is now allowing foods to be sold
in plastic without quickly aging on the shelf and without
going stale. This is allowing us to produce packages for products
typically not sold in plastic - milk, salted snacks (new Frito
Lay To-Go-Snacks), ketchup, beer, etc.
Established in 1837, The Procter
& Gamble Company began as a small, family operated
soap and candle company in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. Today, P&G
markets more than 250 products such as Tide, Pringles, Scope,
Cover Girl, Max Factor, etc. to more than five billion consumers
in 130 countries.
April 12th:
The Environmental
Protection Agency's mission is to protect human health
and to safeguard the natural environment — air, water,
and land — upon which life depends. EPA employs a highly
educated, technically trained staff, more than half of whom
are engineers, scientists, and environmental protection specialists.
A large number of employees are legal, public affairs, financial,
and computer specialists.
What started out in 1989 with
a handful of dedicated engineers and a great idea for a product
has grown into the Global Positioning System (GPS) leader–both
in sales and critical acclaim. From the time their first GPS
handhelds supported the Coalition forces in the Gulf War to
the present, GARMIN has helped to
take GPS to new heights by going beyond the ordinary features
and performance found in typical GPS receivers. GARMIN is
the first name in GPS innovation.
