GROW 2002 Summer Workshop - Exploring
Computation
Presented By: Dr. Matthew Dwyer,
Associate Professsor, Computing and Information Sciences
GROW girls were introduced to
the basic building blocks of computing hardware. Participants
were able to construct their own simple electronic circuits
that achieve simple (combinatorial) calculations. Participants
learned how to describe their strategy for solving those problems
in the programming language Logo, and discovered the power
of computing in scaling to much larger instances of the problem.
Participants also learned how to use some simple commands
to draw complex geometric shapes, and explored what amounts
to an enormously powerful "spirograph"-like playground.
