National Hazing Prevention Week Webinar

A Hazing Death: Five Years Later & 10 Lessons Learned

Tuesday, September 23 at 1pm in Union room TBA

75 Minutes in length

Presenters:
Allison Swick-Duttine, Director of
Fraternity/Sorority Life
Steve Matthews, Dean of Students
Jerry Lottie, Assistant Chief of University Police

The discussion will center around the procedures in place before the death of Dean Jennings, and the lessons learned following this tragedy about investigations, sanctioning and educational efforts. In addition, the panel will share how they were able to change the hazing culture on the campus through effective partnerships and prevention efforts. While this tragedy, and many others have happened in the fraternity/sorority community, we all know that dangerous hazing practices take place in many different types of organizations. Effective prevention and intervention efforts must be campus-wide to have the greatest impact.

We ask that you have at least one officer in attendance. If you would like to have more than 10 people from chapter attend please let us know so that we can accommodate our space for you.

Greeks Go Green service activity!

The following message comes from Patty Zehl, Program Manager for projectPLANTS (Promoting Lifelong Activity and Nutrition Through Schools). Ms. Zehl can be reached at 785-532-3193.

You are invited to participate in an exciting new opportunity to cultivate a new generation of gardeners and healthy children. During this past summer a high tunnel greenhouse was assembled at each of four USD 383 Manhattan/Ogden schools: Amanda Arnold, Bergman, Ogden and Theodore Roosevelt. Beginning the week of Sept. 29th an after-school garden club for 4th and 5th graders will begin in each of these schools.

We are looking for volunteers who can commit to at least one day a week, from 3:30-5:30pm during the 2008 fall school term. The garden clubs at each school will be held twice a week, Monday through Thursday. There are also many other volunteer opportunities available for people who cannot commit to this time frame.

Please consider this wonderful opportunity to be a healthy role model for children and enjoy the therapeutic benefits associated with gardening activities. Please pass this information on to your friends who may be interested. We hope to hear from you soon.

Identifying a registered and safer IFC member chapter event.

It’s important chapter members understand what a registered and safer IFC fraternity chapter event will look like should the chapter host the event at their chapter home or at an chapter out-of-house. Please use the following tips as a guide for identifying a safer chapter event. Should your chapter leadership desire a list of registered chapter events for the upcoming weekend, please email the PHC/IFC Directors of Risk Management – Courtney Rager (cdrager@k-state.edu) or Kyle Crow (crow2@k-state.edu).

At all registered out-of-house or chapter house fraternity events where alcohol is present, the following can be observed:

  • There will be one entrance and at this entrance ids will be checked, and bracelets given to guests of age.
  • Only guests recorded on a guest list (submitted by the hosting chapter at time of registration) should be admitted.
  • All alcohol will be provided on a BYOB basis – host chapters will not provide alcohol.
  • Keg beer and hard alcohol will never be present/admitted.
  • Alcohol presented by guests at the entrance to the event will be taken directly to the bar – drink tickets will be offered in exchange, at the quantity of beverages brought. (A maximum of six 16 oz. beverages may be brought into an event.)
  • “Sober monitors” will be identified and clearly present.

The complete IFC Event Responsibility Policy can be found on the Greek Affairs website at http://www.k-state.edu/greek/members/forms.htm. It is encouraged all chapter members be familiar with the IFC Event Responsibility Policy if they choose to attend an event at a fraternity chapter house or fraternity out-of-house.

Be You. Be Greek. Be Involved.

Our IFC Judicial Policy is in need of an overhaul. Director of Judicial Affairs, Heath Vincent is looking for 3-4 fraternity men to serve on a task force that will review the current policy and make necessary revision recommendations. The Task Force is scheduled to meet 2-3 times throughout the semester on Tuesday evenings. If you or someone within your chapter is interested, contact Heath at hvincent@ksu.edu.

Get Involved with Greeks Go Green

Greeks Go Green, an initiative aimed at improving our community’s sustainability, is in need of fraternity men interested in getting involved and making a difference. Kellen Begnoche, Director of Community and Internal Relations, is forming a Greeks Go Green Advisory Board. Members of the council will have the opportunity to guide the direction of this new program. This is a great way for younger members to get their foot in door within the community. Applications for the council can be picked up in the Greek Affairs office or by contacting Kellen, kellenb@ksu.edu.

K-State Ambassador Applications

As the fall semester hits full stride, the time to plan and promote Homecoming Week 2008 has come. One of the most important events taking place during Homecoming Week at K-State is the election of the two K-State student ambassadors (1 male and 1 female), who represent the university at a variety of events organized by the Alumni Association and the President's Office. We are asking for your help in reaching out to qualified students who possess tremendous school spirit and pride to apply for the student ambassador position.

In order to make the process easier, we are making nominations possible online at www.K-State.com/studentambassadors. From there, you can find a description of the Student Ambassador position, a sample application and a nomination form. Nominations can be submitted online. You can also either print off a nomination form from that Web site or use the attached form and campus mail it back to the Alumni Center. We ask that you please provide us with the necessary contact information of students that you believe would be outstanding candidates and interested in this position. Feel free to forward this address on to those in your department who would have possible nominations to make.

The nomination deadline is Thursday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. Students that are nominated by members of faculty and staff will be notified by mail with a 2008 student ambassador application and will also have the option to complete the application via the Alumni Association Web site.

Student and faculty/staff panels select student ambassador finalists through an interview process. The finalists are then up for election by the student body during Homecoming Week. Candidates will be judged by their enthusiasm for K-State, leadership skills and university involvement. Deadline for applications is Thursday, Sept. 25 at 5 p.m.

Thank you for helping promote this fun and honored position that will represent Kansas State University in the coming year. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Tom Roesler, the student ambassador adviser, at 532-5057 or via email at troesler@k-state.com.

Current Delta Upsilon President, Robby Flack is this year’s male Ambassador. I’m sure he would be willing to answer any questions of provide input for any of your members that might be interested in this great opportunity.

Pi Beta Phi, Alpha Delta Pi and Sigma Phi Epsilon chapters announce Ali Kemp Bandstand

The following message comes from Merrell Harmon, Vice President of Philanthropy for Pi Beta Phi.

The Kansas Beta chapter of Pi Beta Phi is excited to announce that with the help of Alpha Delta Pi, Sigma Phi Epsilon and the support of the Greek Community at Kansas State University; we are putting on the 5th annual Ali Kemp Bandstand on Thursday October 2, 2008 at the Wareham Opera House at 6:00PM. Please help our efforts by spreading the news to non-Greeks that T-shirts can be purchased for $12.00 at Varney's Bookstore in Aggieville starting September 26th.

Ali Kemp Bandstand is a fundraiser in remembrance of a Pi Phi chapter member Ali Kemp, who was tragically murdered in 2002. Ali would have been a sophomore at Kansas State University. The purpose of this event is to inform and equip women with protection techniques through self-defense training, hosted by The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation. The self-defense class is then followed by a benefit concert. All the money raised from Ali Kemp Bandstand is donated to The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation started by Roger Kemp, Ali's Father, to help other women learn to fight back. Ali's Father and mother are Sigma Phi Epsilon and Alpha Delta Pi alumni, that is the reason for our tri-sponsorship of Ali Kemp Bandstand. I have received numerous emails from K-State Alum who were in Ali's Pi Phi pledge class, all were so grateful we were continuing this event. Please join us in continuing this tradition and keep Ali's story alive.
