The Fraternity Review
Issue #2: September 12, 2008
Greek LEADS is tomorrow!!!
In years past, Roundtables and Greek 101’s/301’s have cluttered schedules and existed without defined purpose. This year, an innovative new program called Greek LEADS will replace many of our current programs. Greek LEADS will take place TOMORROW and will provide chapter officers and new members with a unique development and enrichment opportunity.
Officers will convene at 9:00 am for a special presentation by professional speaker, Rick Barnes. At 9:00 Rick Barnes, a professional speaker will address to full group on the topic of Fraternal Relevance. At 10:00 and 11:00 concurrent session begin; chapter leaders will choose which sessions they feel most appropriate to their role – some topics will include:
• Membership Retention by Dr. Bosco
• Lessons Learned at Colorado State University by Leigh Thiedeman (past Fraternity and Sorority Advisor at Colorado State)
• Engaging your Alumni by Mindy Weixelman - Kansas State University Foundation
• Dirty Little Secrets by Brandon Cutler
During the afternoon, new members will hear from Rick Barnes via his presentation "Leading with your Letters" as well as take part in the K-State specific session "Proud to be Greek." New Member registration will begin at 11:15 a.m. New Member programming will conclude by 5:30 p.m.
Be You. Be Greek. Be Involved.
One of keys to our community’s success is the willingness of fraternity men to step forward and assume leadership roles within the community. As another semester kicks into high gear, there are a plethora of opportunities for both new and old members to serve and lead. Read on to find out how you or one of your members can make a difference!

Task Force being assembled to review Judicial Policy
Our IFC Judicial Policy is in need of an overhaul. Director of Judicial Affairs, Heath Vincent is looking for 3-4 fraternity men to serve on a task force that will review the current policy and make necessary revision recommendations. The Task Force is scheduled to meet 2-3 times throughout the semester on Tuesday evenings. If you or someone within your chapter is interested, contact Heath at hvincent@ksu.edu.
Get Involved with Greeks Go Green
Greeks Go Green, an initiative aimed at improving our community’s sustainability, is in need of fraternity men interested in getting involved and making a difference. Kellen Begnoche, Director of Community and Internal Relations, is forming a Greeks Go Green Advisory Council. Members of the council will have the opportunity to guide the direction of this new program. This is a great way for younger members to get their foot in door within the community. Applications for the council can be picked up in the Greek Affairs office or by contacting Kellen, kellenb@ksu.edu.
National Hazing Prevention Week Webinar
A Hazing Death: Five Years Later & 10 Lessons
Learned
Tuesday, September 23 at 1pm in Union room TBA
75 Minutes in length
Presenters:
Allison Swick-Duttine, Director of
Fraternity/Sorority Life
Steve Matthews, Dean of Students
Jerry Lottie, Assistant Chief of University Police
The discussion will center around the procedures in place before the death of Dean Jennings, and the lessons learned following this tragedy about investigations, sanctioning and educational efforts. In addition, the panel will share how they were able to change the hazing culture on the campus through effective partnerships and prevention efforts. While this tragedy, and many others have happened in the fraternity/sorority community, we all know that dangerous hazing practices take place in many different types of organizations. Effective prevention and intervention efforts must be campus-wide to have the greatest impact.
We ask that you have at least one officer in attendance. If you would
like to have more than 10 people from chapter attend please let us
know so that we can accomodate our space for you.
B.I.G. comes back bigger!
The following message comes from Kellen Begnoche, IFC Director of Community and nternal Relations. Kellen’s email address is kellenb@ksu.edu.
We are currently planning an all-Greek community service day called BIG (bring in the Greeks). The event will be on October 18th (not a k-state football game). This is the Saturday prior to homecoming, so you will be working with your homecoming partners. This should be a great way to kick-off homecoming.
BIG has been done in the past, but we are going to change things up a little this time. We are going to be doing community service projects in Manhattan as well as the neighboring communities (Wamego, Chapman, Junction City, Fort Riley, Ogden, and maybe a few others). If anyone in your chapter is from these communities, let me know.
Please mark this event on your chapter's calendar. We would love to have as many people as possible. You will be receiving more details as the semester progresses. We wanted to make sure that you all were aware of this event well in advance.
If you have any chapter members who are from neighboring communities such as Manhattan, Wamego, Junction City, Chapman, Ogden, etc. please send me their names and contact information. The theme is: "Going Home for Homecoming" and we would love to know if people from our community have connections to these area towns in a effort of better serve our community!
K-State Family Day – Children's Carnival
The following message come from Jonathon Hermes, Director of Public Relations. Reach Johnny at jhermes@ksu.edu
Family day this year is on September 27, 2008. Once again we will be
hosting the Children's Carnival at the Bosco Student Plaza from 10
a.m. to noon. We will be having all homecoming partners collaborate on
a fun and safe children's game, and host this activity on the day of
the event. I will need the names and numbers of each chapter member
that will be in charge of your activity.
K-State Ambassador Applications
As the fall semester hits full stride, the time to plan and promote Homecoming Week 2008 has come. One of the most important events taking place during Homecoming Week at K-State is the election of the two K-State student ambassadors (1 male and 1 female), who represent the university at a variety of events organized by the Alumni Association and the President's Office. We are asking for your help in reaching out to qualified students who possess tremendous school spirit and pride to apply for the student ambassador position.
In order to make the process easier, we are making nominations possible online at www.K-State.com/studentambassadors. From there, you can find a description of the Student Ambassador position, a sample application and a nomination form. Nominations can be submitted online. You can also either print off a nomination form from that Web site or use the attached form and campus mail it back to the Alumni Center. We ask that you please provide us with the necessary contact information of students that you believe would be outstanding candidates and interested in this position. Feel free to forward this address on to those in your department who would have possible nominations to make.
The nomination deadline is Thursday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. Students that are nominated by members of faculty and staff will be notified by mail with a 2008 student ambassador application and will also have the option to complete the application via the Alumni Association Web site.
Student and faculty/staff panels select student ambassador finalists through an interview process. The finalists are then up for election by the student body during Homecoming Week. Candidates will be judged by their enthusiasm for K-State, leadership skills and university involvement. Deadline for applications is Thursday, Sept. 25 at 5 p.m.
Thank you for helping promote this fun and honored position that will represent Kansas State University in the coming year. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Tom Roesler, the student ambassador adviser, at 532-5057 or via email at troesler@k-state.com.
Current Delta Upsilon President, Robby Flack is this year’s male Ambassador. I’m sure he would be willing to answer any questions of provide input for any of your members that might be interested in this great opportunity.
Please help keep Hale Library quiet areas quiet
The following message comes jointing from PHC/IFC and Hale Library leadership.
Welcome back to classes! It is encouraging to see that so many members of the fraternity and sorority community are off to great start and preparing to meet the challenges of being academically successful at K-State.
Many chapters are utilizing the Hale Library for study groups. The library staff, IFC and PHC are pleased to see so much activity so early in the semester.
We are writing to request your assistance in making sure that all
users of the Hale Library Great Room understand that the area is
restricted to quiet study at ALL times. Groups currently using the
Great Room have been disruptive at times - especially during arrival
and departure. This is of great concern to other patrons, the library
staff, and IFC and PHC because the activities are compromising the
integrity of the quiet study space.
If your group is using Hale for study, please check with the library staff regarding expectations for library use prior to your next study session. You may contact the information desk. It is possible that there may be other areas in the library that are more suitable for your group's study if maintaining the integrity of the Hale Library quiet space is not possible for your group. Small group study is also available at the Alumni Center.
We are suggesting that you find an alternative location - other than the Great Room - to do check in/out for your study session. Perhaps chapters could check-in on the main floor hallway outside of the main entrance.
The library staff, Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils are pleased that academics is such a priority for fraternity and sorority students and look forward to the appropriate use of Hale Library facilities - most notably library quiet areas such as the Great Room.
