Leadership
Leadership opportunities
You will have many opportunities to become involved in leadership positions. Since fraternities and sororities are self-governing organizations, members gain experience in many leadership capacities.
Most houses will have 10 or more officers as well as a variety of committee chairpersons. For instance, a chapter treasurer gains invaluable experience by working with a budget that may exceed $200,000. Another opportunity for leadership is the officer positions available with the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils. All of these experiences serve as excellent references for prospective employers.
Today’s employers seek individuals who have been involved on campus and in their living groups. Fraternities and sororities offer great opportunities for you to gain this experience.
Greeks represent 20 percent of the undergraduate student population, but they hold nearly 65 percent of the leadership positions on campus. Fraternities and sororities can help you become involved on campus in departmental clubs, student organizations, and student government. The Panhellenic and Interfraternity Councils sponsor many programming events, such as Greek 101 and a new member workshop, about issues important to the Greek community. New members listen to nationally known speakers on issues such as academics, substance abuse, diversity, date rape, and leadership.
