Opportunities for Upperclassmen wanting to live in the sorority home during the fall 2009 semester
The concerns of an upperclassman participant may differ somewhat from those of a freshman. Although the majority of a sorority’s new member class will be freshmen, they recognize that upperclassmen have much to offer. While participants may not be active members of a sorority as long as freshmen, their maturity and leadership experiences will be great assets to the chapters.
Sororities do not usually house freshmen.
Chapters are able to reserve bed spaces for women who are current members. Consequently, the majority of the chapters do not have bed space available for this fall’s upperclassmen new members. Even if a participant does not live in the chapter house, there are still plenty of ways to remain active! All chapters host weekly chapter meetings and dinners for all members. Philanthropies, date parties, and functions with fraternities and other sororities will all help new members become active sorority members.
All chapters are planning to pledge upperclassmen.
As an upperclassman potential new member, a participant's housing options are as follows:
- Participants may come to recruitment without any pre-arranged housing, hoping to pledge a sorority that has bed space so they can move into the house directly after recruitment ends. If the participant chooses not to pledge, or if they pledge a sorority that does not have bed space, they will need to make other housing arrangements at the end of the week. Housing and Dining Services has guaranteed space for any potential new members in this situation.
- Participants may come to recruitment with a residence hall or apartment contract, realizing that they will be obligated to fulfill that contract, even if they pledge a chapter that has bed space available. For those with residence hall contracts, keep in mind that contracts may be canceled however penalties are incurred. Please consult your Housing and Dinning contract for specific information.
