What you need to know

Tips for a successful recruitment experience

General tips for a smooth process

Traveling between chapter homes

Breaks are quick! Participants should ensure they are on time to events by traveling quickly between events. Recruitment guides will offer instruction to help participants find their way.

Always wear your nametag

Participants should always wear their nametag visibly. Nametags should be worn on the upper right side of the chest and should remain unadorned.

Consider carrying as little as possible during the day

Participants will be unable to carry a bag/purse into the chapter home and instead will be asked to leave their bag with a recruitment guide assigned to the chapter as a host. Anything a participant should need, a recruitment guide will likely have.

Don't carry a cell phone

Participants are asked to not carry cell phones during scheduled events. Participants should leave their cell phones in their residence hall rooms. All recruitment guides have phones in case a participant is lost or encounters an emergency. If a family emergency exists, family members should call the 24-hour recruitment hotline. From there, the student will be located.

Keep an open mind

Participants who do the best during the recruitment process keep an open mind about what they are experiencing. Certainly the week is stressful, and many women may be experience disappointment at one time or another. Participants who use the recruitment process to learn as much as they can about all 11 chapters at K-State—and appreciate each for what they can offer—enjoy the recruitment experience more.

Talk to your recruitment guide

Each participant is assigned a recruitment guide. This person is to help counsel the participant through the recruitment process.  Participants should talk to the guide frequently—ask questions, share feelings, talk about important decisions.

Recruitment conversation tips

During recruitment, participants will need to be able to talk about themselves and their interests. Because participants will visit all 11 chapters on the first two days, sometimes these conversations may become somewhat repetitive. Below are some common topics discussed to better prepare for conversation during recruitment. Remember that the key to recruitment conversation is to have fun and be yourself!

Academics

During the first two days of recruitment, participants can expect to talk about their major, why they came to K-State, and what made them select their majors. Education is the primary reason students are at K-State, so participants should be prepared to discuss it.

Summer

Participants will be asked about summer jobs, vacations, and any interesting things they did over the summer. Sharing fun stories about traveling, working, movies they have seen, or concerts they have attended will make the conversation much more interesting and fun!

High school activities

High school activities give sorority members a good picture of who each participant is and what types of things interest them. Participants may spend some time thinking about what they enjoyed participating in during high school: sports, volunteering, clubs, or any other hobbies and interests.

Leadership opportunities and involvement at K-State

Participants may also wish to talk about any goals they have for their college career or if there are any organizations they would like to get involved in. Participants may meet someone with the same interests who can tell them more about it. If participants are interested in leadership positions within a sorority, they may ask questions about those opportunities.

What you want to gain from being a sorority woman

Participants should be sure and spend some time thinking about the qualities they would like in a sorority. Here are some examples of what to ask about:

  • Academics
  • Community service
  • Leadership opportunities
  • Sisterhood
  • Social activities
  • Time commitment

Remember that recruitment is a mutual selection process, so participants should identify the qualities they are looking for in a sorority and ask questions to find the best fit!
