Libraries: KSU Libraries (lib.k-state.edu) are the academic heart of Kansas State University. They maintain more than 2.5 million volumes to support the diverse academic, instructional, and research activities of K-State across five Manhattan campus libraries.
Reference librarians are available to help with research and projects more than 80 hours each week when classes are in session. Through the Ask a Librarian service, students and faculty are able to receive assistance in the way that works best for them: in person, or via email, phone, instant message, or text message. Instant messaging is embedded throughout the Libraries’ website, making help available at the point of need.
Librarians serve as expert consultants for each and every major and program at K-State, provide one-on-one and course-based assistance with research problems, and help build an extensive collection of print and online materials. Of specific assistance to graduate students are librarians in the Faculty and Graduate Services department (http://www.lib.k-state.edu/depts/facgrad/) who provide a variety of instruction, programs, and collaborative assistance for graduate student courses and research. You should feel free to consult with these librarians at any point in your graduate career for help with research for classes or your thesis or dissertation.
The Libraries leverage technology to make their collections as accessible as possible, offering the “Get It @ K-State” service which links citations with online full-text and suggests similar research, a document scanning and delivery service, and an ever-increasing collection of e-books and e-journals. The libraries’ website serves as an authenticated access portal to licensed research databases for K-State students.
K-State’s main library, Hale, offers 24/5 access to resources and study space during the fall and spring semesters with supplementary weekend hours and 24/7/365 computer access in the Anita Lehner 24 hour study area. Beyond traditional library collections, Hale houses the largest campus computing lab with over 200 Windows and Mac computers available, and other campus IT resources such as the IT Help Desk, Media Development Center, and assistance formatting electronic theses, dissertations, and reports, plus Einstein Brothers Bagels to sustain you during those long study sessions.
The Manhattan campus branch libraries offer specialized research assistance and collections for engineering; architecture, planning, and design; veterinary medicine, and math and physics.
Student Union and Bookstore. The K-State Student Union is the campus center for social, recreational, educational, and cultural activities. This 260,000 square foot multipurpose facility opened in March 1956 and is supported only by generated revenue and student fees. The Student Union embarked on a $11.5 million renovation in May 1998 was completed in July 2000.
The K-State Student Union was built entirely by student fees. It features a full-service Bookstore and a food service operation that includes the Bluemont Buffet, Caribou Coffee, and catering for events hosted in the Union. Additionally, a food court offers menu items from Chick-fil-A, Taco Bell, Panda Express, Noble Roman's Pizza, Sandwich Central, Market Carvery, and a bakery and salad bar.
The Student Union has a recreation area complete with bowling, billiards, video games, proshop, and engraving and metal photo services. The Subway Sandwich Shop is located in this area. An art gallery, information counter, convenience store, computer store, full-service campus Commerce Bank, computer lab, copy center, campus ID card center, postal center, ATM machines, two auditoriums, campus vending services, and reservation and conference services are also located in the Student Union.
Union Program Council (UPC) is the student volunteer arm of the K-State Student Union. UPC provides more than 350 programs each year for the social, cultural, educational and personal growth of students. The Office of Student Activities and Services is located on the ground floor of the Union.

Campus Police. The University Police Department is responsible for the protection of all properties owned and operated by the state educational institution or its affiliates. This authority is granted under state law. While service to the K-State community is of great concern to the department, the prevention of crime and investigation of all reported crimes is also of prime importance.
The department assists with parking control and regulates traffic control. Traffic and parking regulations are established by a student/faculty/staff Traffic and Parking Council, by authority of K.S.A.-74:3211.
The department is responsible for providing physical security on campus property. This includes opening and closing buildings, monitoring security cameras, and maintaining 23 emergency telephones strategically located throughout the University.
The University Police Department is open 24 hours a day. It provides a contact for emergency repairs and acts as the University operator outside normal business hours. The department has sworn police officers on duty 24 hours a day. Home Page: http://www.ksu.edu/police
