Recognition for Excellence

Geography students are successful competitors for a variety of prestigious national scholarships, academic programs, and professional organization awards. Geography student scholars have been recognized by agencies such as the National Science Foundation, NASA, the Association of American Geographers, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Department of Defense. Kansas State University geography students have also earned a total of 18 GTU Buzzard Scholarships, the most of any university in the United States.

The dedication and efforts of the geography faculty and staff to advance the department's teaching, research, and professional service missions are frequently recognized by Kansas State University, other U.S. and international universities, professional organizations, and national agencies. 

Recent Student Honors

Master's student Christopher Morris was named a Fellow by the Evidence-based Inquiry into the Distant, Remote or Past (EIDRoP), NSF GK-12 Program at Kansas State University.

Doctoral student Ryan Bergstrom was named as one of two K-State doctoral nominees for the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools Excellence in Teaching Award.

Doctoral student Katie Costigan received a Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant from the National Science Foundation.

Doctoral student Heidi Mehl was awarded a Science to Achieve Results (STAR) Fellowship by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Doctoral student Ryan Bergstrom received a Summer Graduate Student Research Grant by the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies.

Doctoral student Melissa Belz received the Evelyn Pruitt National Fellowship for Dissertation Research from the Society of Women Geographers.
