The Office

Lisa Percival, Administrative Specialist: Personal highlights and accomplishments over the last year include some small home improvement projects, losing 20 pounds, and winning the All Events Champion title in the 2002 Kansas Women's Bowling Association tournament for our division. Somehow I don't think the home improvement projects will ever be non-existent. I have several things in mind, but time, know-how, and money all limit how fast I can get them accomplished. The weight loss is a work in progress. With over a decade of poor eating habits and virtually no exercise, I have my work cut out for me. But I'm off to a good start. And I just finished out my third year of league bowling and plan to continue next year. I never thought that I would enjoy it as much as I have. My friends actually did two years worth of begging before I finally agreed to join their team. Now it's something I look forward to every week. By the way, that All Events Champion title is deceiving. It doesn't mean that I'm a good bowler. It just means that I had a very low average and somehow managed to bowl very well during state tournaments.

I'm constantly wishing I could turn back the hands of time, especially at home. My daughter will be in fifth grade next year...her last year in elementary school. Parenthood hasn't exactly been a cakewalk up to this point, but I've been told by several people to enjoy it while I can because things are about to get very bumpy. Isn't that encouraging!! And looking through old student files, I'm realizing that I've been with the Geography Department for eleven of my 12.5 years here at K-State. I've seen a lot of people come and go. More often than not, when someone wants info on an alum, they'll say "I'll ask Lisa...she's been here forever." They used to say..."Lisa wouldn't remember them, that was before her time." I guess I must be older than mud. Did I mention that I'm constantly wishing to turn back the hands of time?

As always, I would love to hear from you. Email me at lisarp@ksu.edu

Congratulations!

Please join us in offering Congratulations!! to Lisa Percival, Administrative Specialist, in the Department of Geography, for being named a Classified Employee of the Year!  It’s an elite award and well deserved.  Lisa was recognized at the Classified Employee Recognition Ceremony May 2003 in the K-State Student Union Ballroom.

Bernadette Schmidt, Administrative Assistant: Since I am responsible for the newsletter, I have the dubious pleasure of "harassing" people for their newsletter contributions. Now it's my turn to write and I have gone blank. I don't have much news this year, but it's been said, " No news is good news." It's hard to believe another school year has come and gone. I have found individuals in the Department of Geography to be dedicated, diligent, and sometimes humorous, which is always a plus!!

Each spring, my husband, Joe, and I continue the work on our yard's landscape plan. New plantings this year included: two rambler roses for the pergola, and a third to ramble up a large tree (We hope!), a Don Juan climber rose for a new arbor, azalea and forsythia bushes, a rhododendron, lilac, a pink cloud beautybush, hosta, additional plants for the "butterfly garden," an all red perennial bed of flowers, and a herb garden. We have a strawberry patch that has produced abundantly (25 quarts in the freezer), and a vegetable garden that already is good eating. Gardening keeps me happy and healthy, (except for the mosquito and chigger bites!!) Best wishes to you all!

Kellie Bartlow, Office Assistant: This past year I've been busy finishing up my course work at K-State. In May, after four years of class, two years of working in the Department, and countless laughs and fun times, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Much of my free time this past year was filled with making the most of my final year at K-State by being with friends, attending Campus Crusade meeting, and learning how to swing dance (always a fun pastime!) By the time you receive this year's newsletter, I will be working in an orthopedics office in Topeka. My goal is to work for a year and then, hopefully, attend medical school in the fall of 2004. Thanks to everyone for making the Department such a great place to work, I deeply enjoyed my time here! Have a great year!

Stacia Wood, Office Assistant: Hello Everyone! I hope this year finds everyone well. I have really enjoyed working for the department for the past four years. Unfortunately, this will be my final newsletter article. I will only be working for the department during the fall semester next year because in the spring I will be away doing my student teaching. I would like to thank the geography department for welcoming me into the department and making my time here at K-State such a wonderful experience. I have met many great people and it will be sad to leave. Through the department, I have been able to learn more about different landmarks and cultures that have always been of interest. Thank you again for the opportunity for work for such a great department.
