GEAR-UP is an acronym for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for
Undergraduate Programs. It is a federally funded (nationwide),
state-administered program designed to stimulate interest in college
attendance, awareness of college entrance requirements and knowledge about
available financial aid by middle school and high school students.
The Kansas State University GEAR UP II program serves the Junction City students who graduate in the
year 2006 and 2007. The program provides Course Selection/College Preparation
Advice, College Entrance Exam Preparation, Assistance with
Admissions/Financial Aid Forms, Exposure to Cultural Events, Mentoring,
Counseling, Tutorial Services, In-Service Training, Leadership Training, and
College Campus Visits. Support is provided for the adults who influence and
assist middle school and high school students, specifically their counselors,
English and Mathematics teachers, principals and families. Scholarships,
based on academic success and financial need, may be provided for GEAR UP
students going on to college.
